CBS Sued Over Two and a Half Men

I have watched 7-10 shows, EVERY one is the same, their mommie fucked them up by being a cold distant bitch, I don't need to watch 10 years of the show.

That's pretty funny considering according to IMDB, Holland Taylor, the actress who portrays the mom appears in less than half of the show's episodes. From the two seasons I've seen, she's not even a focal point in all of the ones she does appear in as well.

For some reason this thread title makes me laugh. I can't help but think that CBS has sued 2.75 men for some reason. :D

If Jon Cryer walked up and handed me a grocery bag full of diamonds, I would still want to punch him in the face.

Something about that guy ...

Joe, very violent

Eh, I think he's funny. He's supposed to be a well meaning schlmiel. Two and a Half Men fulfills its function. It's supposed to be funny, and it is. It's not pretentious. That's why I like it.

Of course they're getting sued. It's a terrible show.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees that. The show could repeat the same episodes for 10 years and people would think it's funny, because that's all they do! it's the same exact story every episode!
Yeah, well, we "sheep" see something different because we give it more than a cursory glance.

Also, you're talking about the basic premise of a series. The same premise elements will appear in every episode. It's HOW they're done that distinguishes one series from another.

The same elements appear every week in The Big Bang Theory or M*A*S*H, or Battlestar Galactica. You can just as easily say they're always "the same show" every week.

I've only seen a few episodes of 2 and 1/2 Men, so I can't be completely certain, but based on what I've seen this show seems similar to Everyone Loves Raymond. Raymond feels like they've just copy and pasted the script from the previous episode, didn't touch any of the jokes, and changed the story slightly.
Of course I know that's not what they do, but back when I was watching Raymond it just seemed like I was watching the same episode over and over again.

Then you watched the 7-10 episodes dealing with that. The mother is a recurring character. She's rarely the main (or even secondary) focus of the week's storyline. Perhaps three per season.

But Holland Taylor is an excellent comedic actress to bounce off of. To under-utilize her would be a waste.

The mother is simply recurring backstory and part of Alan and Charlie's development. To generalize about her repetition is like saying "Oh, no. Ted Baxter's an idiot AGAIN??? He was an idiot LAST week, too!"

Holland Taylor was on Bosom Buddies with Tom Hanks way back in the day, wasn't she? She's hysterical. Her horror at her grandson "being a hillybilly" had me in stitches. She does "aghast" very well.

Interesting trivia -- Holland Taylor has never been married.

:guffaw:Maybe Bigdaddy needs to actually watch a season to see its not all the same.

Comedy is so subjective it cracks me up when these threads (all too frequently) crop up and boil down to

"it's not funny"
"yes, it is"
"no it isn't"
"but it's hilarious"

etc etc

It also cracks me up when someone prefaces their remarks by stating they've only seen a few episodes, or even none at all.

If the networks went by those standards, we never would have had an All in the Family, M*A*S*H or Cheers.

Sitcoms are rarely "instantly funny" at a single viewing. The idea is to get to know the characters to further "get" the situation which produces the comedy.

Strange that this can (superficially, like you did here) describe my favourite sitcom ever, "Arrested Development". And I WISH that went for 7-10 years.

Guess you didn't like that show, either?

It doesn't usually take me very long to get into a sitcom. Most characters on sitcoms, even the great ones like Cheers, are pretty simplistic. You don't have too many Londo's on sitcoms. As long as you watch a good episode that should be more than enough to tell if you'll like a show or not.
