Only thing missing from the story is how she would dress him in his Star Trek jammies (that she custom made for him of course) and put him back to bed at 11 snuggling his plushie tribble in one hand and clutching his personal autographed photo of Gene rodennberry in the other

They could also dictate the nature of perks, if any.

But seriously, how different is crowdfunding from donating directly through a production's home website?

For one thing, the for-profit crowdfunding sites make money off the crowdfunding contributions. That doesn't happen for direct contributions.

Speaking of diplomacy, here's a you-tube video of one of Robert Meyer Burnette's twitter posts directed towards JJ Abrams from about 4 months ago. Too bad this vid wasn't shown during JJ's interview while he was defending AP, Axanar et al. JJ might have kept his mouth shut realizing what a bunch of :censored: are running Axanar.

If anyone out there is planning on writing about Axanar, it might be smart to start taking downloads of the Axanar pronouncements emanating from their thought leaders in the last year or two. I suspect if their case explodes on them, they will be deleting all they can.

Just change "Star Trek" to "Star Trek: Axanar" and then to just "Axanar".

I am not sure how studios could set guidelines for fundraising based on funding paradigms that are evolving. The guidelines would be end-arounded at some point.

I don't think the "abandoned IP" argument washes; just look at all the rebooting going on.

The only solution I can see is studios vetting proposals one by one, with "guidelines" being the starting point for discussion.

Things relevant to new media are changing too quickly to be anticipated 100% by guidelines.

I give Axanar Productions credit for recognizing that this rising technical ability will create potential new content providers for networks.

I give Axanar Productions the razzie for trying to prove this and position themselves ahead of the pack by walking all over their potential customers (the studios) and donor fans when Axanar couldn't get the studios to accept a pitch from a company with almost no bench capable of making the vision happen (August podcast, their plans and their frustration they couldn't get CBS to buy in to the company as a future content source).

If you want to sell your idea you need to assemble the ability to do it (technical and management and industry knowledge, not just a green screen), and not make yourself untouchable (poor decisions, badmouthing, poor business admin, etc.) in the target industry in the process.

I think that is where they are going to argue that by not telling them they crossed the line in meetings they gave them permission to go ahead.

Whatever it will be related to these discussions Alec had with CBs.

We are telling you that we have the right to object legally if you do what you are suggesting, even if we look the other way for others we want to grant grace to. The law says its up to us, we don't have to look the other way for your case too. You are explicitly asking, and we are refusing to answer. Take a hint. Have a nice day!

Here is one thing to remember. That laundry list of affirmative defenses... Those are things Alec and Axanar have the burden to prove and I'm not sure they can prove any of them,.
 
Wil Wheaton posted a response to J.J. Abrams' bombshell on Reddit.

I know and like JJ. He's a good guy who genuinely loves the same things we love.

That said, this whole thing has felt like a PR move to get on the fans' side, possibly without fully understanding the facts of the case.

I mean, if I were one of them, and I heard that CBS/Paramount were suing a fan film, and that's all I knew, I'd jump to defend Fandom, because there's no downside. Especially with the new movie coming out, you get to champion something fans care about, and maybe get the benefit of the doubt from people who saw that first awful trailer and felt like Star Trek was being turned into Generic Sci-Fi Action Movie.

I could be totally wrong, but this is what my instincts told me as I read these stories over the weekend.
