Abrams's statement was made Friday; this document was filed with the court yesterday. Do you really think that Alec was personally responsible for anything that appears in the response? I'd imagine that everything therein entirely reflects the best legal judgment of the lawyers rather than any outbreak of ego on his part.

The above is classic and pretty much represents actions GR has taken since he first wanted Leonard Nimoy to just wear the 'IDIC' pin so he could sell it to fans at a higher price; then to GR first wanting to use the FJ Tech Manual designs for some elements of ST:TMP to then being enraged the licensing deal Paramount gave Franz Joseph allowed Franz to keep the rights to those designs (meaning GR would have to pay royalties - which is when the 'two nacelle rule" came into effect; and then there's GR edict that TAS was 'not cannon', etc. Well played sir!Ooooh - we're talking about Gene's Vision™ again! I'm struck by how frequently Alec openly threatens physical violence.
So, somehow Erin Ranahan psychically discerned JJ Abrams beforehand? I can guarantee that response was rewritten furiously over the weekend to take advantage of JJ's comments; but if they go too far (and they might have here), I have a feeling both JJ Abrams and Justin Lin will be getting e-mails form C/P saying - "You know when we told you guys we'd work out a settlement with Axanar? Well, after that response, um, no..."
We'll see.
Although I am sure @jespah will have her expert take on the Answer, in my layman's view this feels like more of the same "Throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks" - the Defense denies everything, attempts to reuse arguments from the MTD, names a dozen or more affirmative defenses, contradicts several of those defenses, spends a few pages praising the fanvenance of Alec, and then flips a bird at the Plaintiffs by countersuing. Along the way it makes some unintentionally funny assertions, like those little curlicues on the Space Elf robes were Chinese, not Vulcan, and that CBS/P have abandoned their copyrights. 
Oh and it still pretends that Paramount and CBS haven't clearly provided enough evidence of who owes what copyright.
It's the best Ranahan can do, and it won't hold up very well in the light of day.

Absolutely. What I doubt is that "Alec's ego" had any part in the rewriting of the response. It was almost certainly done entirely by the lawyers in whatever terms they thought would bring the best outcome given the circumstances.
Most notably when it's highly unlikely it'll actually come to pass.

Reading the response/counterclaim. So they're defense is boiling down to "Dude, we're like, totally cool and the fans love us, and CBS/Paramount don't own Star Trek like the fans do, and Peter is like a super-fan, so you better be nice to him"

I have to confess I don't understand why people get aggressive on the internet. Whenever I've been on the receiving end I just think 'you do know you're just words on a screen to me?'. If Mr Peters does it as often as it's been suggested it does describe someone with some issues.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury I give you a man who is a life-long Star Trek fan, but has no knowledge of Star Trek.
Every single time I've had online bullshit bleed over to the meat-world (people offer money to get my location, someone trying to get my wife deported by sending a letter to INS/DHS, someone making a point to find out where I live and threaten my family; none of it ever from TrekBBS, another messageboard entirely), all three times, it's be over stupid Star Trek bullshit. I kid you not.

I think she may have realized a while ago that this isn't turning into the type of reputation-building suit she may have thought she'd gotten into at the start. Ethically, she's kind of stuck with it now, and has an obligation to give it her best shot with what she has to work with. Still, it smacks of desperation, not inspiration.

Well, along that train of thought, what if the director and producer of a certain third film in a franchise were a little worried about how it would be received? What if they wanted no distractions around the buzz from when the film opened?
Remember, multiple things can be true at the same time. Abrams and Lin could be concerned and pressed to get the matter settled. The higher ups might have decided "Well, instead of taking Alec to the grave-yard, we'll just take him to task by settling the matter. He loses something, we lose something, but there's no mote in the press-eye during the release of the film."
It may be less of a big change, in as much as instead of going for 100% of the goal, they'll settle for 60% if it doesn't impact the franchise.
Note, given Axanar's Answer today, where they've now made JJ and Lin's statements part of the case AND counter-sued CBS & Paramount, I do wonder what impact that's going to have on those very same higher-ups.
