CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Joe,

That August 2015 blog post doesn't state that CBS asked Axanar to remove 'Star Trek' from its title. It merely re-states that it was a unilateral action, taken in November 2014, by Axanar to reduce the amount of explicit Trek IP it was using in its operations.

In fact, the 2014 blog post has a comment from Terry McIntosh below that explicitly states the action was not taken at the behest of CBS.

I can see where Sean is coming from. Getting in on the ground floor, long before the money came rushing in and Lord Alec went off the deep end, it all seemed like just another fan-project (in the same vein as Horizon, Phase II, Continues et al.) - and why wouldn't it?? The only people at that point who knew this was destined to turn into a trainwreck are those who already knew about Alec from his Propworkx shenanigans or whatever.

Have sympathy or don't, I don't care. To say though that 'he should've known......' is pretty short sighted. Ditching like he did right after the lawsuit broke was the right move IMO and the only people who really deserve what's coming are those who didn't bail right away and/or willingly stayed on. *(the release of the annual report should've set off alarm bells, yes, but given the relatively short amount of time between that and the lawsuit's filing, jumping ship in early january is still definitely understandable)

I'm sorry about Horizon too and who/whatever else might be S.O.L because of this. I just want to see discovery done and get this whole mess resolved so the fandom can get back to enjoying things again.

Exactly so.

Well, Terry Farell is talking in twitter like renegades is not going to go ahead either now.
I guess it's all going as we feared.
(I could be reading tweets out of context, I only glanced at it quickly, but after the Horizon thing...Guess that's it.)

That's not how I'm reading it. She's being cautious but not sounding defeated.

On advice I am going to stop talking about this subject. Thanks for the support and please understand if I don't respond to questions going forward. Thanks
That shows you have better legal brains than some lawyers by training.

I really hope you get through this and work for Trek in some capacity. You've always had solid stuff.

No reply needed nor expected.

And the studios are doing it because they are backed into a corner where they can have no slack which any pro bono seeking-leverage-at-any-cost law firm can point to.

Great post.
I agree with you 100%

It's time for the giant poop stain that is Alec Peters to be cleaned off of the fan film community. I think everyone should have gotten the message by now as to what is "too far" - and if they didn't, well there is no hope for them.

There are probably many fans who haven't heard the details yet. But the news that other films are being shut down will spread the Axanar precis quickly -- they are being shut down because Axanar tried to make a profit and wouldn't quit when asked. And claimed there's no such thing as UFP or Vulcans in Trek.

Really, I think this development will do more to move Axanar's defense into closing than the threat of a jury someday -- raise the whole fan base against them. And that unfortunately might also be a calculation by the studios.

Well seeing as how Alec has caused CBS to essentially C&D the Horizon sequel, time to post this image

Anybody have an idea as to what caused CBS/P to pull the trigger on Horizon- was it due to the fundraising target level?
Of all fan productions I would have thought they would have been safe- no physical sets and a very simple production set up.

I get the impression they don't want the Axanerds to go "Well you are suing this fan film but not the others"

They probably view fan films overall as a loose end to be tied up at this point, even if they are playing by the rules. My guess would be, they're angling to get their house in order so as to strengthen their position and score the best possible outcome once the ball gets rolling.
