Since he's fond of comparing Propworx to Christie's...
Alec has claimed that he bid on every item in a past auction (which included consigned items), because 'he wanted the items himself.'Proxy bidding is using a program to bid for you in set increments if you are outbid, as far as I know. It doesn't imply that you weren't genuinely trying to win the lot.
Shill bidding is bidding on your own auctions to increase the price the eventual winner pays and generate the appearance of interest.
I know he has said this many times, but I take it it's a matter of public record that he DID graduate?I thought law school graduates learned about ethics at some point.
I think a definite pattern is emerging regarding Alec Peters business practices/ventures.I don't think this was linked to in this thread, but everything else has been, so maybe I just missed it. Here is an example of Alec Peters in action, going back to 2009.

Even if he legitimately did, it's hardly good business practice when acting in a professional capacity to sell those items. It opens you up to exactly the sort of insinuation we've all made. There's a reason why employees are normally exempt from entering a contest, for example. The mere appearance of impropriety if they were to win.Alec has claimed that he bid on every item in a past auction (which included consigned items), because 'he wanted the items himself.'
That's as close to fraud as you can get - he can claim he legitimately wanted everything, but chose not to pay an elevated price, but for goodness' sake that's a very, very fine line.

He's never admitted to shill bidding that I am aware of, since that would be fraud. But he has openly admitted to proxy bidding, which reputable companies like Christies don't allow. Since he's fond of comparing Propworx to Christie's, I find this amusing.
Marketworx aka Auctionworks - started in 1999, Alec resigned in 2005, reportedly raised $16,000,000 in venture capital.
Yes but usually if someone says they're making a fan film they are referring to a filmed story, not carpet tiles and convention appearances.usually, when one says they built an xx million business, if thats what he meant, they are referring to the revenue or the market value, not the raw dollar investments.
If he bid on a lot of items and lost most of them, I might start suspecting that was shill. At the BSG live auctions he was bidding on certain items and winning a fair amount of the time. And we knew these were pieces he wanted for his personal collection. He was as big a fan as the rest of us. But I kept thinking, why would I want to bid against him? He automatically had a 20% advantage over me, plus the shipping fees. I was gobsmacked that he bid in his own auctions. Anyone who dared question it was belittled and eventually slinked away. I thought it was very unprofessional. What's the difference between proxy and shill? I've been in the room and it looks like shill to me.
Over and over I have read AP say he founded this and then sold it for 16 million. Was it actually a sale, or was that number really just investment, without any further info about what outcome was achieved with that money? are you sure that was only investment money?

By the way, what business is it he supposedly sold for $16 if Propworx went bankrupt?
Professional Responsibility, of course, is a required class at the UNC Law School: http://www.law.unc.edu/academics/courses/I thought law school graduates learned about ethics at some point.

Alec & Co attended the Silicon Valley Comic Con last weekend but didn't bother to tell any of his super fan donors he was in town until the Con was over (see the comments in the link). Avoidant much, Alec?![]()
He didn't announce his attendance in advance on the Donor Page??Alec & Co attended the Silicon Valley Comic Con last weekend but didn't bother to tell any of his super fan donors he was in town until the Con was over (see the comments in the link). Avoidant much, Alec?![]()
Awesome, I hope you did enjoy yourself. I didn't know about the Con until it was over and I've been too busy anyway. I've been hoping someone would ask AP hard questions he'd rather not answer at one of the Cons he attends.I was there. Thankfully, I didn't run into him nor did I attend his panel. I decided I'd enjoy my Saturday.
