Except my response was in reply to the question of whether any of the CBS Star Trek fan film rules were in writing. CBS obviously communicated that they were not happy or authorizing of Axanar to Mr. Peters; but to that end, I don't think they explicitly said (or wrote) how he could modify his fan film to avoid a lawsuit.

I guess the talk all along has been that the studios don't want to be pinned down, for some legal reason about giving away rights that would occur if they gave explicit instructions. So you are probably right.

Maybe CBS was just gathering final confirming information from an unwitting horse's mouth that salaries were being paid, models made, etc. Could they have heard about this from Axanar so early? One might imagine that if they held a meeting, Axanar might openly have pitched all the things they are doing and tried to sell CBS on approving the best benefits for CBS ever.

Don't know how many places Alec related the meeting details, but one of them is in the bit of podcast I transcribed upstream. He said this:

You know, listen, I met with the people at CBS two weeks ago, and they said, look, they're not talking to us, ...

Did they fly in VPs just to say to him "we are not talking to you"? Hm.
Reading transcript in the linked post, I think the they're is Renegades and the us is CBS. At least that is how it reads in context.
From that post:
But calling yourselves a pilot gives you false legitimacy, which is *what* they were looking for. The people who were saying this at Renegades were *looking* for false legitimacy. They have continued to do it til this week.

They sent an email out to everyone, said "oh, we have hired one of the best lawyers, and, unfortunately CBS can't move forward at this time". And the whole thing was, was, basically false legitimacy. You know, listen, I met with the people at CBS two weeks ago, and they said, look, they're not talking to us, you know, so, and I don't want to knock Renegades, but, we have to be really smart about what we're doing, *considering* that we are using their IP.

I am starting a new LikeStarter campaign "Help me get more likes that @BillJ "

Those who "like" this post with their primary account get lunch with me, Richard Hatch's former assistant's cousin, a picture of Boomer, and Mike Bawden (Axanar's criminally underpaid PR man) on speakerphone,

Those who "like" this post with their primary AND secret secondary account get the above rewards, PLUS a special patch (design to be revealed later), a DVD of screen caps from me refreshing the screen as the likes go up, and a hand drawn poster of my original design for the U.S.S. Zuckerberg.

Those who "like" this post with ALL their accounts get all the rewards above PLUS an honorary mention in my signature, automatic "like backs" for the next 6 months on all their posts, an honorary mention for them and another member of their choice in my status update, and a special edition DVD including the material mentioned in the last perk and BONUS commentary from three random strangers and a guy dressed up as Deadpool.

Disclaimer: all likes are the property of TBBS. If I am sued, likes WILL NOT BE RETURNED but instead will be sacrificed to satiate the rage of @T'Bonz.
Eh. I'll wait until I see what the patch looks like. Plus, I've already had lunch with Richard Hatch's former assistant's cousin. Nice person. Paid for dessert.

From that post:

I think for the sentence before the Alec quote, that's right. The sentence about CBS seems to me to be Alec stepping back into his situation with CBS. Does this make sense?

There are sound reasons for not putting rules or guidelines for fan films in writing. To do so would give the appearance of tacit approval for unauthorized use of the Star Trek properties. Since there are companies who pay for the right to use Star Trek -- in some cases, a lot of money -- approving of unauthorized uses would devalue the property.

IDK, to me it seems that "they're not talking to us" is there to refute the claim "oh, we have hired one of the best lawyers, and, unfortunately CBS can't move forward at this time". AP then continues on to make the point that his production has no illusions about being a pilot or being picked up by CBS. My reading of your transcript, anyway. ;)

It could be. I saw no reason to think he was continuing to speak for Renegades in the 2nd sentence, I thought the paragraph's point was to contrast Renegades not smartness with his smartness, and list everyone's recent experiences with CBS. But you could be right too.

I seem to recall this conversation occurred in Vegas at the Star Trek convention, so no one flew in just for this meeting.

Neil

Thanks, accurate context is the proper way to proceed.
