That was a cogent, thoughtful and accurate analysis of the Axanar situation, right up to and including the phrase "Apropos of nothing at all..." - after that it went off the rails pretty quickly and I've no idea what Gerrold was on about.

They've all ruined their careers with CBS/Paramount.

Oh, wait... they didn't have those.

(Well, Burnett did kinda. But that's probably the only thing really lost.)

Peters and his cohorts must really hate all the good work you're doing :)

Loeb and Loeb on the other hand must be delighted :D. They should buy you and Hinman a drink after the case.

I've also been avidly watching American Crime Story, and wondering if we'll ever get a glove moment if/when gets to trial.

I think a "glove moment" is inevitable if this goes to trial.

Urgh, scratch that. Goodreads was fucking with me.

He did have a story published by a company called...Omnium Gatherum? Maybe not 'vanity', but it does describe itself as 'small press'.

There's no real vanity press anymore, there's just self publishing. I had an argument about it once, an found out a big name writer for another franchise had some outside work published....then the company that publishes that, after a Google search of businesses, had himself and family as managing director and staff as executives.
So basically, unless it's one of the bigger houses, or you know of the publisher and know it's works, there is a decent chance it's just someone filing paperwork to avoid the stigma of self publishing/vanity press.
I have no dog in this fight though, just find that kind of thing interesting as I self publish stuff myself (kindle make it so easy, so why not, beats trying to find a small agent to get a bigger agent to look at a few pages of something, so they can get a small publisher to look at it Nd maybe publish it in the hope that an even bigger publisher eventually buys out a franchise, and God knows what your percentage is for actually writing the damn thing after that. Amazon's 70 percent author royalty sounds even more generous then.)

I would love to be a fly in the room when Peters gives his deposition.

I want to be a spectator in one of the seats in the Gallery!

Curious, I never noticed the Wood Post thing in this picture...it strikes me as symbolic of this whole caper...

FWIW, the letter of Heinlein's quoted above was written to Harlan Ellison. I have the bio, but don't know the rest of the letter... Still, I wonder if RAH was hoping Ellison, who knew Gerrold better, would be able to get him to "chill" on the selling of flat cats.

In Gerrold's thread someone asks what if producers of fanfilms enrich themselves. Gerrold replies that he doesn't know of any fanfilm where the producer enriched themselves.

Clearly a man in the room.

Edited to be more clear. He said no fanfilm based around enriching the producers.

For what it's worth, sometimes some of the more famous/"important" Producers have had their travel and lodging expenses paid for out of the "production budget" (i.e., pocket/wallet of the less famous/"important" Producers). I don't know if this constitutes "enriching" a Producer--but it's probably incidental to the production, not the basis for it.

I was thinking both the salary and the travel expenses. And having your SAG fees paid by production, which I'm not aware of that being standard.

Peters was enriched. Either Gerrold doesn't know, is being willingly ignorant, or is using a different definition of enrich.

When I worked in micro-budget many moons ago, made it de rigeur that volunteer crew got travel expenses and a decent meal. Actors - who were all professionals - didn't even work for scale. Only major expense was for equipment, materials, stock and post-production (all reduced). Neither myself nor director took any fee.

But we did blow what was left out of budget (yes, we came in under) on a screening party for cast and crew :)
