I think it's more like how Marvel has Stan Lee as an exec producer on all their films. He's not doing much but it's an homage.At this point it's becoming "stunt casting." Shatner will be a creative consultant before they're done.
Everyone "gets" it in their own way. David Gerrold says he decides who gets Star Trek and that is also a lie because everyone likes different things about it. You know, IDIC and everything.
Peters' version of Star Trek seems to be pewpew over character (a lot like JJ's).
gotta disagree. A lot of fan films hit the notes of shows or movies they're doing a take on, and this one was doing that for Wrath of Kahn. The plot made no sense and tried to mimic a better movie.
It wasn't easy to find a halfway decent photo of Judge Klausner, but I finally did.

It really seems like one of those lame Kharnival rides that always breaks down. You look forward to something great, but a Wayne or Garth clone pushes you through just to get you to the end.
What I find a bit funny is the accusation that "Into Darkness" was pure "fan-wank" when that kind of fan service has long been a part of Star Trek. Re-hashing popular plots, bringing back popular characters, leveraging well-received ideas and even calling back phrases and dialog with a not so subtle wink at the audience.
I actually thought Into Darkness was a pretty good movie. It had a lot to say about the militarization of the government, overreach of power, and other, smaller bits of social commentary.
Yes, they wrapped it in a "Wrath of Khan" package and filled with over-the-top action, but watch those two movies back to back and you realize that outside of "that one scene" and a few characters they really don't have anything in common.
Also, "that one scene" I thought was played well, and the reversal worked brilliantly in my eyes...
In TWOK it was the culmination of their friendship, with Kirk losing his best friend and coming to terms with his old age in a harsh and sudden way. in ID it was Kirk's death that made the emotionless Spock realize just how much he valued him as a friend-- particularly poignant after not-so-subtly saying that he didn't need any friends. It was Kirk's "death" that solidified their friendship, in fact.

Seeing as we're talking about ID - anybody notice how Khan roll's his eyes and has a look of disbelief when Kirk tells him how he did the aerojump in the previous film?
