As he described it, his contribution was mainly telling GR "Look a generational ship travelling to another Galaxy and never mentioning Klingons, Vulcans, et. al. isn't going to work for Star Trek fans. If you're going to do it that way, why include 'Star Trek' in the name?"

interesting. told GR "true trek fans know what is authentic trek, you don't"

sounds like GR wanted a reboot universe, or to reuse his metaphor of "wagon train to the stars"

I think "Tiberius" was less a David Gerrold thing and more a Roddenberry thing. I recall that Roddenberry created the character of "Lieutenant William Tiberius Rice" (played by Gary Lockwood) in Roddenberry's pre-Trek television series "The Lieutenant." I think Roddenberry simply got to work in Kirk's middle name in Gerrold's script.

David Gerrold once told me that he gave Kirk the middle name of Tiberius.

I remember reading Gerrolds columns in Starlog magazine as TNG was developed, but I don't remember the idea of the generation ship that noname mentioned above as an early concept.

He mentioned that at a Loscon panel in November 1986 (where he also said he wasn't really involved any longer with the actual production that was going on for the show at that time). I remembered it to this day because at the time I was like "Yeah, that would suck.." and it stuck with me.

He dropped out really early. Filming for "Farpoint" didn't begin until late-May of 1987.

Kirk's middle name of "Tiberius" from "More Tribbles, No Troubles" is the same middle name of the lead character Lieutenant Rice in Gene Roddenberry's "The Lieutenant" from the 1963-64 season.

I'm not convinced that Gerrold arrived at the same "Tiberius" middle name independently from Gene Roddenberry selecting that same name ten years earlier.

Apparently, that was the last time he understood Star Trek fans.

Which is exactly why, reboot or not, the new series will likely still be on a Federation starship-- possibly even one named Enterprise-- and despite declarations that it will involve "new aliens and civilizations" you'll still see Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans, et al.

There will still be communicators, phasers, photon torpedoes, transports and everything that the general public knows, in some form or another.

Why does everyone keep saying the middle name was revealed in "More Tribbles, More Troubles"? That's incorrect. Kirk revealed his middle name in "Bem".

It was my understanding that DC Fontana ran the Star Trek end of things, but the animation studio, Filmation, had the final say. I think GR rec'd a substantial fee for abandoning creative control.

It may just be the boilerplate defenses to infringement (tailored to meet the facts of this case) thrown out there as a prelude to asking for settlement terms. Not exciting stuff.

will be interesting if the attorneys stamp out all fight from it except for legalese. but then why did they take it pro bono if they only aim at settlement?

I think the only extent GR was involved with TAS was for the residuals and any other paycheck he got.;)

Last question before further thread drift, the point about relenquishing creative control. Didn't he veto the whole 'Kid sidekick' for each of the main characters that had been proposed? I know art was produced in the preproduction phase of TAS.
