CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

I do enjoy all the Star Trek Fan Films, even the ones that use a Kirk, Spock, McCoy I do understand why people center their production around Star Trek. For one it's searchable just for having Star Trek in the title another is because you can invoke Star Trek metaphors and existing renders without explaining what it is.
If the ranaxA fiasco creates a list of hindrances on the ST fan studios, I wonder if any will be prompted to dispose of the brand altogether.

I think those who would walk away from Star Trek over this would be directing their anger in the wrong place. CBS/Paramount were acting within their legal rights, Alec was not.

I agree, but there are many who can't be swayed by facts. They are swayed by their "rightness" and nothing will convince them that their cause is wrong.

But when many of these people claim their boycott of Beyond and its going to be the downfall of JJ, well, they're thinking their group has more power than they actually do. "meaning Axanar" is a speculative and not very sharp interjection, there.

The context is not difficult to follow. Fans continuing their project. The project continuing after being halted by the lawsuit. JJ was referring to Axanar only. The only reference to other fan-films was the guidelines.

And JJ used the collective plural (fans) which backs up the idea of Axanar (and Alec) as a sort of figurehead or representative of fandom as a whole. Oh, plus Axanar has more than one person attached, whether they are a direct defendant or just a doe.

If c/p were just going to drop it then it wouldn't take a few weeks. That could be done today. A few weeks would only imply settlement negotiations and unless c/p has been told to accept any terms to make it go away, then there is no way jj can know for sure settlement talks will be successful.

And yet there is no rational answer why this was made public before Alec's attorney reviewed this status change, considering it is he, and not the fans, who is the defendant in this case. Those changes are supposed to be communicated to the parties directly involved by the appropriate people. Since JJ isn't the defendant's atty, he's not the appropriate party. Alec was surprised by the announcement, remember.

I saw how people here reacted when the news broke. There was a period of shock and awe sort of like GW Bush when he was told about 911, followed by this regrouping and spinning various scenarios that would allow Alec to get through the meat-grinder after all.

It smacks of denial.

Dropping and settling are very different things.

And yes AP could very well screw trust up. Point is if ap doesn't know of this settlement and hasn't approved it then jj cannot know for sure this will go away.

Bottom line CBS cannot allow him to profit off their ip. A nonprofit fan film sure, but axanar coffee, games, etc cannot be allowed.

Why not? Alec's S.O. is doing a mini-series based on Supergirl. Granted, thus far I have yet to see any crowd-funding campaign for that project.

No, not quibbling. Dropped and settled, when talking about a lawsuit can be polar opposites. For example: CBS/P can drop the suit, walk away from it, because they feel they have no case, or it's not worth pursuing.OR they can settle, which usually means that an arrangement between parties has been reached. A settlement can (not always) involve payment by the defendant, and certain terms. It's not necessarily the "easy out" you think it will be. You think this is a victory? Since Judge Klausner ruled against the MTD, I think the IP owners have more leverage. If Alec doesn't take the settlement, then discovery process is up next.

JJ did not intervene and ask the audience to cheer this peacemaking just to see CBS/P send AP through a meat-grinder on the way to settlement. The only difference I see between "dropped" and "settle" is a veritable slap on the wrist. Everyone's free to speculate, but the kind of punishment some people are still pining away for is unlikely.
