CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

I wonder if it's not just the inevitable overspill from Axanar affecting the Horizon follow up, but also related to the new TV show wanting to keep that time period for it's own use ?

Yes that is a part of it (but not all of it) , trying to clear 2017 as much as possible. STC will be making there announced final episodes (though it will obviously carry through 2017) . Str will be shooting its final episode this summer. Etc.. Etc.. They want to clear some of these projects that were in the planning stages that have the potential to draw some media attention.

BTW, nothing has changed with STR, incase some people here were wondering. :)

From what I've read (I think elsewhere in this thread) the situation with Horizon isn't without precedent. There was an author who'd Kickstarted a book about Kirk who got a polite letter from CBS saying "finish the project, give the donors what they paid for, but don't do this again." That could equate to them leaving the near-complete Horizon alone but blocking the launch of the new film.

The Continues campaign remains an oddity. I would've expected it to get shut down while this case was ongoing, but perhaps replicating the TOS style rather than a more modern look is providing a degree of protection as others have suggested. That or, now the Axanar case is dragging on CBS/P see more of a need to be proactive in a way they maybe weren't when it launched.

It's a shame we won't get to see a Horizon sequel, but I'll be keen to see what Tommy does next.

It is curious. But I suspect you are right.

I do wonder if a big aspect of Horizon being shut down is they were making feature length. Perhaps it's those two in combination.

Yeah it was just like small comments when he posted here so I thought maybe it was more covering his ass but this seemed like really being pissed so I wondered if something changed legally. @DaveGalanter will you tell us what changed?

My ass never needed covering. (Quite a job, that, if it did.) I am not one to publicly grouse about things. Usually. But among friends I have been quite vocal. I just let some of it peak out today. Scuttling ones own ship is one thing, but when you take a position which then ruins other people's? Well that gets under my skin.

I think many here need to stop jumping to conclusions. Unless something is officially announced either CBS (or Paramount) or the leaders of various fan films, everything should be taken with a grain of salt.

They did not stop Tommy's production because he helped with Axanar, nor is he a DOE. It has nothing to do with that. Much of this has to do with marketing and only some of it has to do with the sensitivity of the Axanar case.

Ask yourself this, who from CBS actually called Tommy? and what department did they represent? (Hint, it was not CBS legal) then you will find you answer.

Was it Scott Bakula? He said it was done nicely. So, it must've been Scott Bakula.

Cool. Scott Bakula is shutting down fanfilms for CBS.

Is this public information? If not, I can ask myself this all day, but will be no closer to enlightenment!

I don't believe that this phone call took place at all - makes no sense at all.
Which phone call do you not believe happened?

1) Do you not believe CBS called Axanar and asked them to stop before filing the law suit?
2) Do you not believe CBS called Horizon and asked them to stop the sequel?
3) Or do you not believe Horizon called Axanar and told them CBS is going to shut down other fan-films?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't I read that Axanar said the first did not happen (nor did CBS send a C&D letter)? That makes no sense to me. Maybe Horizon did call Axanar, but the part about CBS going after others seems off to me.
