CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

The Captain Pike folks were invited to use my sets sets, just as Axanar was, as well as several others have thru out the years completely free of charge. They planned on coming here, but backed out and opted to rent Axanar's sets instead. I guess they felt that would be cheaper than flying their folks to NY. I no longer allow anyone to use my personal property, nor do I invite them to do so.

Mr. Cawley you seem like a good guy and an injured party in all this Axanar mess. I hope you can keep making your stuff and it's good to see there is no case against you.

Quickie bit of court housekeeping. This is nothing unexpected; it just ties up the court's little loose end.

Rent? (*cough*) profit to Axanar (*cough*).

(to be clear - I'm not trying to drag James into this, as I appreciate him being here as well and he may have been speaking loosely - but if his words are accurate . . )

(Edit - just saw I finally got my "edit" button. Yay! So the purpose of this edit is "just because I can.")

James, I really understand your decision to keep your personal property to yourself, it's unfortunate that is what sort of needs to be done.

Thanks James,

You have always been a very gracious host and have allowed numerous fan productions to use your sets through the years. You are, as always, a shining example of how Fan Films should be and the comradely shared between various production producers. It is upsetting to see that this situation has 'spoiled the milk' of that situation. Everyone is in full protect mode, and rightfully so. We don't know where this road will ultimately lead us, but at least we do know who the good guys are, and you are certainly at the top of that list.

I have been PLAYING Trek since I was a little kid, running around my neighborhood with my friends. I am still doing that, although not as much these days, at nearly 50 I would look silly! but my toys have gotten better, lol. I don't rent my sets, I don't charge for anything and I certainly have never gotten any salary for playing Trek with my friends. Over the years I have always let groups use my stuff, I have given away a lot of things to other groups. After the drama I endured last fall I have since closed my doors to other fan groups as I am tired of the associated drama that goes with that scenario. If you are not in it, to have fun and be at Summer Camp, you should not be doing a fan film. There is no question in my mind that CBS owns STAR TREK. They have been very gracious to allow us to play in their sandbox for many years. We have always had a good relationship with CBS and have always complied with any request that they have made of us and will continue to do so. If CBS says stop making fan films, we would abide by their wishes and say Thank You. I have spent far too much of my own money for many years, 15 of them to be exact, Far more than I care to think about, I did it for nothing but the love of the game, if and when it ends at least I can say I played by the rules I was given when I cross the finish line.

When you can do more, "Part time" than others have done, paying themselves "Full time" you clearly live your passion and as a Trek Fan, and someone who enjoys fan films, Thank you, for your leadership... It's a damnable shame that there are those actors who would threaten the existence of the fan film genre for their own ego.

You are 100 times the producer that Alec Peters claims to be. You "get it" where he and his Axanerds never will.

I only have a Producer title, because a project needs some kind of organizational structure, and someone to spearhead things, so in the real world it's a fake title when it comes to fan film's because none of us are doing this for a living or at the pro level. I would simply prefer being referred to as a HUGE Trek fan in reality.

I still can't get an answer from Axanar on why they need a full time, paid producer for a fan film...

Well, you're the Producer. Credit yourself as "HUGE Trek Fan" in the credits.

Producers can make those sorts of decisions.

I think it would kill the illusion they are trying to present of being a continuation of Star Trek.

Two thumbs up, James.
