That's interesting. So the quality of the show is derived as an act of defiance?

Quality should be judged based on the show itself but if someone doesn't like the show for the same reason I do like it or they take away from it a completely different thing than I did; then what they think is inverse to what I think because we're coming at it from such opposite directions.

It's more affirmation. If I like alt-rock and I like a particular song, and another alt-rock fan also likes this song, but someone we know who hates alt-rock says it's the worst thing ever because the song is everything they can't stand about the genre, then I know people are reacting to the song the way they normally would react to it. A negative review from someone who likes the music would make me take notice more than a negative review from someone who doesn't.

I suspect most critics of elements of the show or even its relative position to others in the franchise are genre fans, if not Trek fans. However I get it. I like me some (alright practically ALL of), Voyager and it totally perplexes me when a comment is made that evaluates its story or tone without my superior understanding

Exactly. If someone hates Voyager (I don't, so that's not me) and they say "Message In a Bottle" sucks, and all they ever do is shit on the show all the time, what are you going to care about what they think of "Message In a Bottle"? It's a fun episode.

But, if someone who's a huge Voyager fan suddenly says the same thing, you'd wonder, "Wait. What?!" And then you'd be wondering what's going on.

It might go to show how invested we become. I shall speak for myself but when I see a fellow fan of say, Voyager, turn on the show - it hurts. I don't know why because as you say I have enough stand alone stubbornness to like it anyway.

I saw part of one of the makeup videos on Facebook. Turns out Clint Howard was painted green. I was sure the Orions were all CG-colour tweaking.

I don't think the Discovery folks visit this board, because most people here had their major plot twist figured out well in advance of its reveal...

By the time we got into the mirror universe, then it became a lot more dangerous in terms of treading on things that could expose the character. So you’ll find that in episodes 10 and 11, we actually sort of sidelined Lorca a bit. The other thing that we did is, knowing that [the Lorca twist] was our biggie, that was the one that we really wanted to protect, then you sprinkle in other twists along the way, so the audience can go, “Hey, we’re onto this show.” In particular, like, the Tyler/Voq reveal [an apparently human character is actually a Klingon], which the audience was onto early. That ended up distracting them in a lot of ways, so they weren’t looking at Lorca.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I remember a time when it was considered humble, maybe even classy, to NOT ask for awards for yourselves.

Doesn't work that way in hollywood, unfortunately. It never did, but now its a bit more up front. Having those nominations adds to sales. It would be unfair to your investors not to try for it.

Valid criticism doesn't equal "debunking anything positive"

Valid criticism is subjective.

And I didn't say that, so.....yeah

I have no issue with criticism. I just think it's adorable that when the show gets any attention or accolades, you can count on usual suspects to rationalize away all of it.
