Did this ever really happen at all? The whole thing smells like an urban myth.
Since animals are property and not people they aren't technically citizens, so I would think that would be an easy "out." Or can non-citizens serve on juries?

Don't believe so. Jury duty is considered one of those responsibilities as a citizen. Most states figure it out by driver's licenses, so it's possible they'd call illegals, but odds are they wouldn't show up.
