Castle: "Sucker Punch" 1/18/10 - Grading & Discussion

Been looking forward to this one, can't wait!
I really enjoyed this episode! A few things that were great: One, Robert Picardo was in it!!! He has indeed aged, but they say that wine becomes more fine with age. 
Another was the sexual tension that I noticed between Beckett and Castle. You can cut the tension with a knife! And the scene where a guy was eating a pickled egg and Castle decides to be all "macho" and eat one..then immediately spit the thing out and was choking to death on it and had to have a beer! 
That was freaking hilarious!
Mom knew who the killer was before he even talked..she knew what was going on. Next week's episode is gonna be another hilarious one! Castle ends up getting a tirachilla on his shoulder! YIPE!

Not bad, but it went pretty much like I expected, which is more or less a replay of what they did in Monk -- the identity of the actual hitman is discovered, but not who hired him, so the mystery continues. Not sure how long they can drag that out for without it becoming contrived.
And I hated the bit where she cut open the bag and tasted the drugs. Nobody does that in real life, because it's insanely dangerous. She didn't know what was in there or how potent it was or how her system might react to it. Not to mention that it's contaminating the evidence. It's a stupid cop-show cliche and I hated seeing it here.
Also, Alexis only had a brief, silent cameo, which is not cool. Even aside from the fact that Alexis just intrinsically deserves the spotlight on account of being awesome, she should've had a scene with Beckett here because the two of them have a good relationship forming, a kind of surrogate mother-daughter thing, almost, which would've been a good parallel to Beckett's feelings about her own mother.
The final scene with Beckett and Castle was excellent, though. And his reflexive empathy and support for her was touching. (God, I wish I were the kind of writer who could spend a hundred grand that casually, or at all.)

I have to say I really enjoyed it, but I was not totally surprised by anything in the show. I had a feeling that the brother would be the main antagonist of the episode, I was kinda surprised to discover that he was actually the hit man, but it wasn't that big of a surprise. I figured that the guy would get killed somehow and that Castle would be a part of it. At least she knows who did it now, now she has to figure out why. The pickled egg scene was absolutely hilarious and the ending was quite touching.
It was an okay episode.
The eating the pickled egg and then spitting it out scene was obvious, so it was not really funny.
I didn't see the reveal of the assassin coming, but I'm not so into cop shows or crime related fiction, I'm just in for the chemistry between the two leads and the daughter and mother, which weren't used enough this week.
And like Christopher already mentioned and put in more eloquent words (may he be a user of words?), I always find it strange how fictional cops get not the least bit high by testing all those drugs they come upon.
Colour and smell would be enough to identify heroin, no need to ingest it into your system, but it is necessary to show that those cops are tough on almost any level.
I was glad though, that Kate declined the offer to take the investigation along at first, showed some vulnerability in her.
I wonder if a male TV cop would do the same though.
I haven't seen the preview yet, but I will definitely watch this season to the end. I already gave up Chuck (same old, same old), 24 (only watched season 7 for Janeane Garofalo, which was hardly present anyways), The Mentalist (what a boring show it has become, the characters are just stuck in comparison to Castle), Heroes (what a piece of smegging frack), Bones (same old, same old) and some other shows I watched to often.
Still there is Lost to go to.

Why did she shoot the guy in a deadly spot? Maybe it wasn't intentional, but couldn't she have shot him in the shoulder? That probably would have diffused the situation and left the guy alive to spill the beans. But like you say, they need to drag along the mystery and having the hitman live wouldn't really do that.
Otherwise, a really good episode. I really liked Beckett admitting that she's gotten used to Castle being around and that he makes the job a bit more fun.
Realistically, you're trained to shoot for center mass because that's your best chance to hit someone. It's not like you have a lot of time to react to a guy who's about to blow someone away. You try to aim for a small specific portion of the body, you can miss or it can be ineffective and then what? Dead Castle.
^That's right. Beckett did what she was trained to do.
Besides, it's a TV myth that getting shot in the shoulder is harmless. At best, it can leave you with permanent damage causing chronic pain or loss of mobility. And if the bullet hits a major artery, it doesn't matter where you're bleeding from, you're still just as dead if you lose too much blood.
Then again, given that they did the stupid drug-tasting bit, maybe one shouldn't rule out the use of TV myths in this show.

- Lainie & Dr. Death's input. I hadn't read anything about this episode or seen any previews, so when Castle first noticed that Lainie was distressed, I thought it would end up being a Lainie-connected episode. So I was floored and thrilled when she walked in with Dr. Death with their analysis. (And also, just a little disappointed NOT to get to know more about Lainie. I'd like to see some character development for her soon.)
- All the characters' support for Beckett. THIS is what has made this show so great. All the little silly things that happen, the nuances that the writers and actors bring to their characters, these things have made these relationships MEANINGFUL to the audience. So when something like this week happens, there is genuine weight and emotion to everyone's reactions. Even Martha and Alexis, who I agree were underused this week, still made vital contributions just in body language and support roles. And Castle's immediate response of absolute support - well, let's just say scenes like that are what make me absolutely ADORE Nathan Fillion.
- The fact that Beckett initially walked away. I wish they had revisited script-wise just a little of her initial explanation of why she stopped investigating her mom's murder to begin with. Pulling away was more than just raw emotion - it was fear of becoming that person that she used to be again.
- Getting to meet Kate's dad. And Castle calling her Kate - was that the first time? I can't remember him ever calling her Kate before.

I wanted to find out about Lannie as well. If the series gets picked up next season... I'd want episodes focusing (At least the B Plot) on each of the secondary characters... including Alexis.
