Cast Complete, the human adventure continues.

Just been to startrek.com and it looks like Kirk and McCoy have been finally been cast. And the rumours have been true. Karl Urban is playing McCoy and Chris Pine is Kirk.

We now have our crew of the starship Enterprise.

No, just moisture dripping off of my glass of beer.

Now, all there's left to grumble about is whether or not they'll have good enough chemistry together to pull it off.

Wonder what the hold-up is with casting Pike? It seems of all the roles cast so far, that's the one with the most latitude in who plays it, given we've only seen Hunter's Pike once.

Yeah that's a bummer. Fingers crossed they cast the supporting characters like Rand or Chapel. Or maybe depending on the time frame of this film, how about Number One from "The Cage"?

Yay. and Whew. Now that that is over. Just another year and 2 months of furry speculation and spoiler bobbing. (or dodge spoiler for the those that want to retain their virgin qualities)

I'm sure there will be female supporting characters cast. Rand and Chapel have never been ranked with the "big 7" so we probably won't find out about them until a complete cast list is released later. For a bit I wondered if Elizabeth Dehner might be in the film, but then I remembered Kirk was introduced to her in Where No Man. However the fact no Gary Mitchell actor has been announced is suggesting they might be skipping over that bit of continuity (unless the film takes place after Where No Man, of course).

If this is pre-WNM, neither Rand nor Chapel should be present. Rand was presented as a recently assigned captain's yeoman in "The Corbomite Maneuver" (which is the real beginning of the season despite the recent DVD set's bizarre decision to arrange it in airing order), and Chapel only came aboard to search for Roger Korby. Well, I guess maybe one could stretch things enough to justify Chapel being on board for a year or two before "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" though that wasn't the impression I got from the episode. But having Rand aboard would be a mistake.

But then, having Chekov aboard would be a mistake too, since he'd still be an Academy cadet at this time. I'm hoping his role in the film is fairly minor and peripheral, that he isn't actually serving on the crew yet. Maybe there's a sequence that takes place at the Academy and Chekov is a student who gets caught up in events.

^ Chekov can be the Wesley Crusher of this movie.

Mind you, we don't know when and how he graduated from the Academy, if at all. I know he's not an NCO, but perhaps he received some sort of 'in the field' promotion.

Or perhaps he was a whizz-kid who graduated early.

I know this ISN'T the point you were making, but the reference to Khan recognising Chekov in TWOK has never bothered me as it has others. Pavel could have been on board during that time, but we just never saw him in any of the episodes we saw. But I agree that if this is supposed be the first adventure for Kirk's crew, then he's too young to have been on board for anything other than a training mission.

Of course, as others have speculated, with Lost and MI:3 having jumped about in time and with this movie featuring old and young Spocks, it's possible that this movie may do the same and that we may see Chekov at a later stage during the 5 year mission.

Of course -- indeed, I stated as much in my first Trek novel. Well, actually I borrowed the explanation Allan Asherman had used in DC Comics' Who's Who in Star Trek -- namely, that Chekov had been assigned to Engineering at the time and had led the resistance to Khan's takeover, which was why Khan found him memorable.

Of course, as others have speculated, with Lost and MI:3 having jumped about in time and with this movie featuring old and young Spocks, it's possible that this movie may do the same and that we may see Chekov at a later stage during the 5 year mission.
