I don't think everybody who kills their kids (or anybody else) is necessarily mentally ill. Some people are just dicks.

This really is a sad day.
This really is a sad day.
The sad day was a few years ago when a little kid died, very possibly killed by her own mother.
This is just the results of a massive cockup by the prosecution who were out for blood and glory.
It also drove home just how circumstantial the prosecution’s case proved to be. Forensic evidence was tenuous and no witnesses ever tied Ms. Anthony to Caylee’s murder. Investigators found no trace of DNA or solid signs of chloroform or decomposition inside the trunk of Ms. Anthony’s car, where prosecutors said Ms. Anthony stashed Caylee before disposing of her body.
The prosecution was also hurt by the fact that nobody knows exactly how Caylee died; her body was too badly decomposed to pinpoint cause of death.
All of this allowed José Baez, Ms. Anthony’s lawyer, to infuse enough reasonable doubt in jurors’ minds to get Ms. Anthony acquitted of murder.
That's what has been running through my mind the most this afternoon. Not that it's unimportant that the murderer be identified and appropriately punished, but regardless of who did it a tiny little innocent girl paid the ultimate price for someone else's actions. This really is a sad day.

...binge drink herself to death.

.
The case wasn't strong enough on either side. That said, I think Casey Anthony got away with murder. My guess is that someday soon, she will go out, party and binge drink herself to death. She has thrown her family under the proverbial bus... they will leave her alone and she will decide she is free.

I'm still not getting why she didn't get at least negligent manslaughter?
The case IMO was analogous to a hit and run driver who killed someone and fled the scene of an accident.
Where is common sense? I don't need fucking DNA to know who killed this child. I've completely lost my belief in our justice system.

If you even believe her side of the story that the child drowned in the pool I'd think there would be some sort of negligence that existed by allowing a 2 year old to hang out by the pool by herself to drown anyway without adult supervision.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the jury doesn't have the power to find you innocent of the charge before the court, but guilty of a lesser charge.
To the best of my (possibly flawed knowledge), the jury can only return "guilty" or "not guilty" based on the actual charge being prosecuted.
AP) CAMP VERDE, Ariz. (AP) — A self-help guru was found guilty of three counts of negligent homicide Wednesday in a case that shined a spotlight on a deadly Arizona sweat lodge ceremony that ended in chaos, with participants vomiting, shaking and being dragged outside.
