Case dismissed! Discovery and Tardigrade game "not similar"

I usually find that people that complain about other people using "STD" are usually WAY more narrowminded than those they criticise.

I mean, yeah, every once in a while we will have some one-day-old account appearing that spurs comments straight from the YouTube-comment section and also refers to the show as "STD".

But so far all the long-time posters here using that abbreviation have their good reasons for it, some use it as a joke, most out of habit, but the majority of them honestly doesn't even care that much about (also, some aren't even native speakers). But so far - except for the rare troll accounts - I have actually never seen someone using "STD" to honestly hurt or demean the show. Wheras I have seen plenty of demeaning comments against those using it, often in a very policing attitude.

I cannot speak of other peoples experiences, however:.

I visit many other sites. Your statement is not reflective of the vast majority of the people I have seen use this particular acronym. To them it appears to be one of the dogwhistles used by those who are solely critical of the show, while those who do not use it appear to be far more openminded about Discovery, whether they are critical or not of the show itself.

I find it extremely misguided to interpret and treat extremely common signs and gestures as dog-whistles. Like - actual dog-whistles are a serious, big problem. And I would honestly advice everybody to read up a bit about the most common ones, because it exposes a lot of disguised hatred right out there in the open.

But something as broad as this is not one of them.

This feels like that time when 4chan tried to convince some media that the "O.K."-gesture (thumb and index finger) was actually a secret white-supremacy sign - and convinced a lot of white supremacists to use this sign on photos. But most importantly, LOTS of regular people were suddenly attacked by a misguided leftwing-crowd, "exposed" as supporting white supremacy, only because they flashed the o.k.-sign on some of their pictures, burning a whole lot of good-will from regular people, and making the people that point out actual dog-whistles look ludicrous by association.

Everybody that thinks "STD" is a dog-whistle got played. Like seriously. And those who continue to beat that dead horse only take up the agenda by the divisionists, because their over-reaction undermines their own integrity.

The OK symbol however has been around since the 19th century with a century+ worth of positive cultural meaning and was only recently co-opted as you state for negative means, which most people aren't aware of. STD has cultural meaning which has similarly existed for decades but as a universally negative acronym which few attribute to Star Trek or in any positive meaning at all. I think communities should be allowed to decide whether or not an acronym with a universal negative connotation be associated with them.

(also - I'm seriously crossing my fingers for the Picard-show to be called Star Trek: Destiny. Just to see everybody's heads explode.:guffaw:)

My personal preference is JLPD in deference to how that other famous french speaker got acronymed to JCVD.;) Doesn't work perfectly, but who knows, maybe Stewart will have learned to kickbox just for the show.

This actually speaks to something I've noticed in the forum since season 2 started; there seems to be MUCH less use of STD. That may coincide with much less criticism of season 2 and some of the show's main critics being less prominent. I also think that posters who used STD most often may have realized that it's use stigmatized them as habitual critics. Some of them have taken to using DIS, which I think they may believe is a camouflage.

I would not offer any opinion in agreement or disagreement with the above. But I will say this to anyone reading this, if you see a poster using STD in a post, notice if that post contains anything positive about DSC. That is no coincidence. :)

I would agree that generally people here aren't using it to troll, and hey, that's a reason I hang out here: people are mostly good to each other.

However, on other sites, I find that it's a different story, and it makes me perhaps oversensitive to its use. In my experience, a good 70% of people on YouTube or Reddit who use STD seem to use it as (a) a trolling tactic, (b) a way of dismissing argument, or (c) a calling card for underlying bigoted ideology. I don't mean people who have issues with Discovery and can critique it coherently. I don't even mean people who think it's a blight on Star Trek. I mean the Reddit user who recently complained about having to see gay people on TV, but "what do you expect for a show called STD." For me, that's where STD gets personal and exhausting. I get tired of seeking out venues to talk about a show I enjoy only to encounter folks declaring (for example) how they'd rather people like me don't exist. Dude, I just want to talk about Star Trek.

I think if you browse those sites and see the use of STD, it might seem innocuous. But people who use the term have a way of revealing their hand in other comments. Suddenly they're talking about how it's insidious to have a black woman in the lead role, or commenting on the feminization of "beta males" via Paul Stamets. In my experience, it's not so much that STD is a way of trolling as the fact that it often occurs in proximity to ugly ideas. It becomes a shorthand for an underlying ideology while being able to deny association with that ideology because it remains unstated. And yet two comments or two weeks later, the same person is ranting about black people tarnishing Star Trek's reputation.

Sorry for the long explanation. I know some people use the term innocently, and that's fine. I just get tired of seeing the term, and involuntarily wondering if the user hates people based on orientation or skin color or gender, and then seeing a follow up comment from the user that confirms that, yep, they do.

Perhaps it's time to let this particular debate go?
People are going to use whichever acronym most fits their way of thinking and/or personality.
Whether that's good or bad is probably best left for discussion in TNZ around here.

There could be a causation - but it could also only be a correlation: People that don't like the show simply not visiting the forum anymore.

It is true that "STD" is more often used by people not liking the show. But again - there is ample of counter-examples. I for example didn't use it because I didn't really like the show during it's first season, and wanted to be genuine and honest about the grievances with "DIS". Had I loved it right from the beginning - I would have used STD. Because I have a dumb sense of humour.

Granted - I'm in the minority here. But the thing to remember is - the only reason to even caring about the acronym is because of the reaction, weather it's meant as a dumb joke or to trigger a response. As such - people will never stop referring to it as such.

If people use real dogwhistles like "SJW" or "femnazi" - go ahead, condemn them. But let's be honest here - "STD" is a very innocious joke, used by almost everybody at one point or another.

Oh - don't get me wrong. I get it. I'm just saying - be careful by what acronyms you use to lump people together. Because currently - the "trolls" are controlling and winning this debate.

There is a thing: All the alt-right trolls hate the current iterations of Star Wars, Star Trek, Ghostbusters and all. But not everyone who hates them is part of the alt-right crowd! Not by a mile. Lumping them together only muddies the water and makes everyone lashing out against everyone all the time.
