I think there was also a "Laser Tag" show based on the game/toys.

Yep; it was Laser Tag Academy that aired on NBC if memory serves.

Another favorite of mine was the Dragon's Lair cartoon.

Then there's also Captain N: The Game Master; but it started in 1989, so it might not quite fit the time frame you want.

And even though it wasn't really inspired by something else, Kidd Video felt like it was.

Wasn't Smurfs and Transformers based off of other things, along with Voltron?

The Smurfs originated as a Belgian comic strip. The Transformers were based on a couple of Japanese toy lines. Voltron was a dubbed version of two different anime series from Toei, and the originals were variations on Toei's live-action Super Sentai franchise (the basis for Power Rangers, though it predated Power Rangers by 15 years).

You guys remember DinoRiders? That cartoon was based on possibly the most awesome 80's toys ever... god I loved DinoRiders. And StarCom... StarCom was so awesome. I think I had all of them.
