Last week, we reported that Pixar was possibly getting into the direct-to-video business by spin-offing Cars into a home entertainment movie called Planes. While the success of Cars made a spin-off seem like a reasonable business decision, Bleeding Cool reports that Pixar is not actively working on the movie. Instead, the movie is being developed over at Disney Toon Studios. They’re the folks best known for making disposable, direct-to-video sequels like Bambi II and The Lion King 1½. Pixar isn’t doing the animation and the extent of their involvement is unknown regarding the story.

That looks so AWFUL. Didn't Disney say they were done with making cheap direct to dvd sequels? I can't believe Pixar went along with this...:klingon:

I'll give it a shot, but they certainly don't know how to market like Pixar. The trailer made me barely interested, even though I love Cars. If it's not Pixar, it's not going to have the same level of care and heart that only they seem able to produce in these movies.

Still, I will give it a chance. Maybe the trailer's just poorly done.

As for Pixar going along with it, well, since Disney is THE major partner, it was probably more of a contractual deal Pixar couldn't avoid. That's why it's being headlined as a Disney venture "inspired" by Pixar's Cars.

It's not coming out for 2 years so I'd say it's the teaser trailer and not a real trailer and teasers almost always suck.

My four year old son is stoked for this already.

So what will the sequel after this one be called?

TRAINS? :rommie:

Hopefully not. I want to give it a chance.

I'd watch it. I LOVE trains, almost as much as planes!

And then they can do a big crossover called Planes, Trains, and...um...Cars.

Hm, doesn't quite have same ring to it.

I would probably squee like a little girl. I can't help it, I'm a man who likes his transportation vehicles. :D

Some of the Disney Sequels weren't that bad.

Aladdin & The King of Thieves being the most notable.

Finally, a movie version of Cars, Trucks, and Things That Go!

Heh, I at least like that it tried to evoke Top Gun in this trailer. But what were those things? Service vehicles? They seem to be trying a bit hard to not have any kind of humans.

So I take it that Planes takes place *in* the Cars universe? It's not a world of its own?

In the Cars world, humans don't exist. Even insects are just tiny cars with big wings on them. :wtf: :rommie:

Re: CARS spinoff "PLANES" will be released on DVD

Wonder what Gary Numan's hit single was called in that universe. People? :D

I think there are more than enough properties about trains, Thomas, Chugginton & Underground Ernie, being 3 examples.
