Caribbean Gay Cruise

Gryffindorian

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I was surprised when I heard about this incident on the news last night.

Two Americans traveling on a gay cruise were arrested on the Caribbean island of Dominica for having gay sex on one of the ship's balconies.

Gay sex, known as "buggery" on the island, is against Dominican laws. Public indecency and having sex in view of the public are also against the law there, according to police superintendent David Andrew.

You'd think for a popular tourist destination, they'd be more open-minded out there in the Caribbean, but I suppose some countries/dependencies are not so gay-friendly.

What say you?

I do not really care about the idle problems of rich folks running into trouble because the have sex on the outside of a cruise ship.
I do care about any fight against discrimination though when it is framed in a universal perspective and not that of Western tourists. On a media level this would imply a report about the violence in the lives of Dominicans LGBT folks instead of the report you linked to.

According to the article itself, though, it appears they were charged with public indecency rather than "buggery" (unless that charge was plead down or thrown out in court - the article doesn't say). I'm pretty sure if you had sex in plain view of hundreds of people you'd be arrested in numerous countries, whether you were gay or straight. Now, you can make an argument about prudishness, especially at a tourist destination, but I guess that would depend on whether it's a popular family destination or not.

John Robert Hart, 41, and Dennis K. Mayer, 43, pleaded guilty today to the charge of public indeceny. They were fined $2,400 and were released following payment, Andrew said.
I'm not saying that the fact that they were gay didn't play a part in their arrest, but without more facts I don't really think you can fairly draw the conclusion that this is any kind of anti-gay arrest on the part of the Dominica police.

Maybe they were charged with more at first, and then told if they pay this (pretty steep!) fine, they get off the hook.

Anyway, bad business for sure for a country like Dominica, and jailing people for "public indecency" is completely idiotic.

Where is the problem? They fu**ed in public where it is illegal to do so. Arrest their dumb asses! Oh yeah.. they did.

^Agreed.

Keep the sex in your cabin hotel room. No one wants to see it. Don't turn this into a straight/gay thing. I have little interest in watching anyone fuck their brains out while trying to enjoy a quiet evening.

^ Thanks. And he's not Brent Corrigan anymore. He's Sean Paul Lockhart. ;)

When I first heard the news, I thought they were just seen in the comfort and privacy of their own cabin, not a la Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett in Titanic. So yes, it was rightful that they got charged with public indecency. I'm still leery about the rather conservative and antiquated laws in some of these Caribbean countries and territories.

Ironically those laws are an inheritance of British colonialism. Now the UK has pretty much moved on on this crap, but those Caribbean islands (same as ex-British colonies in Africa) are suddenly growing very fond of those remains of the Empire...

How is this a "gay issue"? Aren't public indecency and having sex in public illegal just about everywhere?

From what I heard initially, they were charged with "buggery," which is the equivalent of bestiality and sodomy. RW, I agree, even the word sounds so British. :)

Buggers of the Caribbean

I have no issues with folks having public sex(other than hygiene ones) but yes, it's not exactly a secret that most places have "public indecency" laws. This was a foolish thing for them to do.

You have good taste.

Were you the one who had a picture of Joey Stefano in a Voyager uniform, and somebody thought it was actually you?

This really isn't a gay thing, this is a "picking a very public place to have sex" thing.
Yeah, as much as I enjoy a spot of public buggery myself, you have have to some common sense about things. I have to go with the consensus on this one - they were stupid. They probably thought it would be hot to do it where people might see, but didn't really anticipate what would happen when people did see. They certainly didn't "get carried away by the view" which was their lawyer's defence.

I know.
But he has no problems with also being Brent. ;)
And he was the best thing in Judas Kiss and not just because of the eye-candy. I was actually surprised how good and "real" his performance was.

I don't care if it was gay, straight, donkey, whatever, they were just idiotic. Depending on what deck their balcony cabin was on, it was probably a very public place. If the pic in the article was of the actual ship, most of the newer cruise ships tower over it. Now add that to the fact that when a ship comes into port (during waking hours) most people who have balcony cabins will usually go out onto theirs and take in the experience. For those with inside cabins, they usually go up to one of the top decks to watch. If there is another ship already in port, many of it's passengers will come out onto their balconies, or go up on deck and wave to the passengers of the ship coming in. From experience, I can tell you that it is a very slow pass by and the view onto the balconies of the other ship are very clear. If they were really that horned up, they should have gone inside their cabin and closed the drapes.

Is straight sex allowed as well in public on the island?
