Car Buffs wanted

My old car with VVTi did the cam switch at 5800rpm and redlined at 9500rpm, so peak performance was keeping it between 6k-9krpm band while going through the gears.

Current car power is between 1800-5000rpm so I shift it differently.

What's gas mileage?

Redline every time man, every time!!!

No really I drive pretty economically in my Saab. But lots of fun and a nice growl when you get the revs up

I rev my car up to 6500/7000rpm quite often once the engine has been warmed up and I'm in the mood. ;) OTOH, when I'm driving to work I usually shift between 3000 and 3500rpm.

Under normal circumstances, it's usually between 1000 and 2000 rpm unless I'm using the turbo. That's usually perfectly adequate for the legal limit.

Having bought an Japanese imported Impreza STI...

Japanese import exhausts are often loud, esp. if it's an aftermarket exhaust. IIRC, there are often exhaust-specific "bungs" you can buy for modded exhausts which you can fit temporarily to the car so it can pass the MOT. Once it's off the ramps, you can remove the bung/muffler and hey presto, you have your ultra-loud Afterburner back (or whatever's on your scooby).

A quick google reveals this example

Re: revs - I regularly redline (or just shy) my S4 which is around 7000 rpm IIRC (can't really remember, but it's high), esp on the shift from 3 to 4. It's lots of fun. Pootling around town in sixth gear, I think I'm around 1800 rpm (going from memory). Despite that high max of around 7000, it feels less revvy than my former car (a Honda Civic Type R) - that you really had to gun to the redline, becuase of the vtec system, which delivered more power in a pretty big "boost" effect above a certain rev (I think it was around 4800 but I can't remember now).

A Baffle Bung, they cost only £25 and oddly enough didn't occur to the mechanic who was looking at 300 for a silencer type thing to suck power from my car.

Thanks for all the ideas folks.

I don't know what the testing is like but can you short-shift to keep the revs lower as the test the decibels? If you car does not have the stock muffler, you can probably find one cheap on-line (ebay etc)

Yeah, those kind of cars are fun... but you really need to pay attention to the rev counter. I loved it though!

Mine? Current S4 does about 20-25mpg (uk gallons) on the freeway and 15-20 around town. The old CTR did about 5-10mpg better. Mind you the S4 is a 4.2L V8, while the CTR was a 2L four-banger (both N/A) so actually the S4 is doing pretty well on the economy.

I think MOT testing he mentioned is done at specified throttle levels or speeds. Not sure though.

No problem - glad to have found you a cheaper option! Hope it works out.
