Captain Rachel Garret...

Lt. LaForge

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Why isn't she ever mentioned among the best Captain's? Sure she didn't have her own show. But she confronted FOUR Warbirds and destroyed two of them while crippling another before succumbing. It is because of her (and her crew's) brave efforts that the Klingon's are considered Federation allies. She deserves lots of credit in my opinion.

For one thing, because how the Enterprise performed in battle isn't widely known and the details only come up from one of the Trek novels that few of us have read.

Secondly, it's mainly because (AFAIK) Captain Garret didn't destroy those warbirds, Commander Castiel did, and that with the help of Tasha Yar, the presence of which ALMOST atones for her humiliating death-by-space-bukkake in Season 1.

Has it ever been mentioned onscreen in Star Trek exactly how the Enterprise-C performed in the battle?

And remember, it wasn't just the actions of the Enterprise-C that led to the peace between the Federation and Klingons. We have onscreen comments by Riker in "Sarek" that Sarek of Vulcan played a role in it and in that second season episode with the deaf/mute guy who also negotiated a key part of it as well.

In another thread about peoples' favourite Captain, Rachel Garrett got several mentions. She ranks pretty highly on my list of favourite CO's.

Commander Castiel
It was Lieutenant JG Richard Castillo (the Chief Helm Officer) who assumed command after Garrett was killed in the altered future.

Only bit that I can remember is Sela mentioning how the surviving crew were captured and the Romulan general having his way with Tasha.
It saddens me to know that Tasha died such a horrible way. They should have kept it away from me. I loved Natasha Yar.

Castillo.

Castiel is an angel on "Supernatural".

As opposed to being sucked into a living oil slick?

That's how things actually happened, though I don't remember anyone from Supernatural showing up in Yesterday's Enterprise. ;)

However, these wouldn't be known in the official record, and according to it, Captain Garrett was in command and therefore would take the credit.

Still, the Enterprise C was pivotal to the peace treaty. Yesterday's Enterprise shows us that if they hadn't got involved the Federation and the Klingons would have gone to war.

She didn't get sucked into it, Riker did. Tasha Yar was fatally bitch-slapped by the tar pit. Well, maybe not bitch-slapped, see for yourself.

The Klingons knew about the Enterprise-C. They knew the ship sacrificed itself to save their Narendra III colony and that act paved the way for the Khitomer Accords to become a genuine alliance between them and the Federation.

The real facts of what happened probably aren't widely known--such as Captain Garrett dying in an alternate future 20+ years later--but as far as most people are concerned, she bravely led her crew into battle and earned herself a place in Sto-vo-kor (as the Klingons would say).

As far as why she's never mentioned, that's because very few captains other than Kirk are ever mentioned. History is chock-full of notable service people that made major contributions to society in real-life, but they generally don't pop up in conversations outside of history classrooms unless there are history buffs present, IMO.

In the big picture, it probably matters little how well the Enterprise-C fought at Narendra III. The fact that they willingly responded to the call for help from a Klingon world and died trying to protect it was the main thing.

One should also note the apparently increased hostilities between the Romulans and Klingons during this period with the Romulans devastating Khitomer and attacking Narendra III.

It could be that the rising tide of hostilities with the Romulans made an alliance with the Federation far more attractive to the Klingons. After all, when an alliance with the Federation ends, they don't start attacking your border worlds.

It also would explain why the Klingons were so willing to toss aside their alliance with the Federation before the Dominion War. They had been allied with the Romulans once as well but that turned hostile.

They'd already responded to the distress call and were fighting when they vanished into the future. So it had to be something they did once they got back which impressed the Klingons enough to prevent the war (probably, fighting to the bitter end) Perhaps they originally mistook the Enterprise-C vanishing into the rift as a cowardly jump to warp and escape.

Yeah, you're right. For some reason I was thinking of that deadpan angel from "Supernatural.":cardie:
