That "A V E N G E" looks terrible. It is almost the same shade of gray as the background and combined with the big space and all caps it takes a moment to even tell what word it is. The poster would be better without it.

The poster looks pretty sweet overall. I do agree that the "Avenge" in the middle is a little odd, but I think I actually like how it takes a moment for the eye to discern what the word is. First you see the character, then his thoughts, or rather his single-minded intent.
The comic geek inside me is really looking forward to the Cap and Thor spots during the Superbowl.

I suppose my problem is I don't quite get where the name The Avengers came from. What exactly are they avenging? I know they want to play this as a prelude to the avengers, but I don't get the significance of the name either in the poster or in the movie.

Well, as far as The Avengers as a group are concerned, it's the idea that they avenge the wrongs inflicted by the baddies on the innocent and powerless, etc., at least that is how I understand it. With superheroes being a more reactive than pro-active lot for the most part, the name makes sense, especially as it carries a somewhat violent connotation that also fits superheroes well.
So, with the Axis powers being the aggressors in WWII, Cap would be The First Avenger in the sense that his purpose is to avenge those wrongs. (Speculation.)

The Marvel movies seem to be deriving a great deal of source material from the Ultimate universe (Cap's costume is almost an exact duplicate of his Ultimate costume) mixed with influences from the normal or 616 Marvel universe.

That's the logo for what ever unit they have him serving in, looks like the same logo on Tommy Lee Jones' uniform brass. I like the wings on the sleeves, same ones on the sides of his helmet later, obviously a unit designator as well, rather than decorative which is neat.

At around twenty-one/twenty-two seconds, one the guys behind Cap is sporting the absurd hat/facial hair that can only be Dum Dum Dugan. I'm assuming the rest of the crew are the Howling Commandoes (and if one of those guys is meant to be Fury, there is, indeed, no eyepatch).
