CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till release

Yeah, I've been expecting this since they first announced the title as Captain America: The First Avenger. It's really not a surprise at all.

Exactly - wasn't this understood to be the reason for "The First Avenger" since the title was first announced? That's always been my impression.

There's a real international marketing problem with "Captain America," and if the studio didn't think they had a work-around they probably would never have greenlit the movie.

it'll always be 'Captain America' to me, no matter what BS marketing title it has. the same as it's 'Wolverine' and 'Wolverine 2' no matter what crap the title card and poster has on it.

I'd rather they dropped "The First Avenger" worldwide. Also, I'm baffled at the assumption that people who hate America won't see a movie about a guy wearing the U.S. flag if it has "America" in the title, but will otherwise be duped into buying tickets.

I don't think there's any concern about the subject, since foreign audiences flock to see American films about American soldiers and other patriotic themes all the time. But the title "Captain America" is a little too close in tone to "America is Your Boss" or "America Rules the World" to be a good marketing choice. It's not the story or the character (or even the character's name), it's just the impression given by the title out of context, keeping in mind that audiences will not necessarily know anything much about the character, i.e. that he is a soldier or that he fights in WWII, etc.

Many potential audience members would probably not even realize initially that the title refers to a specific character and not the country as a whole.

I mean, whatever, I have no idea if the concerns are justified, but those are probably the nature of the concerns: the first impression given by the title itself to a potential audience member with no knowledge of the subject matter, not any aversion that might be felt toward the character once his whole story and identity are known. So it makes sense to draw viewers in with a title that is less off-putting.

Unless they reference the Avengers people are going to be left wondering what the title means.

Are they? An avenger avenges. The Nazi have killed lots of people and conquered lots of territory--plenty of avenging to be done there.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Yeah, but he wouldn't have been the first one to avenge in all of human history.

When they first announced the movie I remember it being titled "The First Avenger: Captain America". At least they didn't stick with that order for the US release.

Nick Fury mentioned the Avenger Initiative. If they reference it in this movie as a government program then it makes perfect sense that Cap is classified as "The First Avenger".
