Still not fond of the costume. I'd much rather it looked like the main continuity version instead of the oh-so trendy & hip Ultimates version. Evans is looking the part, though, and Weaving will make a great Red Skull.

wears the original version - that's actually what he's wearing under the leather jacket but it looks so silly in real life that it's treated as a joke in the film and Rogers get a new costume designed by Howard Stark

Yeah, I'd heard that. It really sounds all wrong to me. It boggles my mind that they've thrown out a costume that was actually designed in 40s in favor of this thing that was created in the 2000s that they think looks more period.

A lot of costumes that look fine (awesome, even) on the page just don't work in real life; they weren't designed to be worn by real people. The movie costume looks like a good variant to me.

But there's nothing on the Captain America costume that wouldn't work onscreen. All you need to do is design it properly, use the right sort of materials and have an actor and director who aren't ashamed of it. You shouldn't throw out the original design & start over. This design isn't adapting a property that's been around for 70 years, this is just the filmmakers wanting to mark their territory to make it "theirs".

I have to say I really like the look of the suit in this image... Although I'm not a Captain America reader. But I am anticipating the film.

Here's hoping they ditch the wings on the helmet as well.

It does.

The pajamas may have been "designed in the '40s," but they were not designed with reference to real-world clothing or materials of the time nor by anyone who had any apparent sense of style more sophisticated than aping other long-john characters in other comics. So that's really a non-starter. Yeah, this does look more plausible, and more "40s" among other things.

Maybe, if they don't want to change the costumes for the big screen, they should just not make movies based on silly-looking characters at all. The idea is not to lose their shirts in the process, after all.

Christopher Reeve wore a near-exact copy of the comic book Superman outfit in his movies, and I've never heard anyone hear he looked silly in it. Ditto Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman. Why? Because they both wore the costumes with confidence and conviction.

You have now: Reeves looked silly. So does Lynda Carter, in the photos I've seen. All the acting in the world can't make up for cheesy costuming. Film superhero costumes should be inspired by their comic book counterparts, not slavish reproductions thereof, because what works on the page--and what has become de rigeur in that format--may not translate to other formats, just like many other aspects of the comic book medium. What matters is the core, not the details.

As for this costume... I'd prefer if it didn't have those grey intersection things on the upper blue part, but otherwise I think it's a nice blend of icon and practicality.

I don't think people minded Lynda Carter's costume because she was such a babe and it was sexy. I really hope they don't switch to pants when we get a live action Wonder Woman movie. Her traditional look is classic, iconic, and of course delightfully luscious. I remember thinking Reeve's costume looked silly when I was a kid, but I think the success of the first two Superman movies proves that it didn't take people out of the movie too much. They learned to go with it and just enjoy the movies because they were great.

I appreciate the Reeve Superman costume's faithfulness to the comics and would like to one day see Batman in a movie costume that isn't way too busy-looking armor, and more simplistic/similar to his comic book/animation outfit. Okay, maybe the speedo-looking thingie outside the pants would never look cool in live action, but the rest should be okay.

I'm digging the look of Captain America so far. Fans of Nolan's Batman franchise often say "I trust Nolan" with every questionable decision he's made since taking over the franchise (particularly when the surprising casting of Heath Ledger was announced). While his filmography isn't even close to being as solid as Nolan's, I have the same endless faith in Joe Johnston on the basis of "The Rocketeer" - still my second favourite superhero/comic book movie after "X2".

I'm waiting to see what they do with those for the modern version of the costume. The cowl that goes with this should be seen I'd guess in the first trailer. Stringing us along with new stuff. Leaving it off entirely is out of the question.
We know from earlier spy photos that the '40's era outfit is going to have Cap with a standard issue looking helmet with the 'A' on the front and the wings painted onto the side of the helmet.

Read the article today and my anticipation for the film is pretty much in the dumps. Hollywood liberalism destroys another American institution. Johnston says Captain America is not a flag waver...he's dressed as a flag, you douche! This movie "is not so much about America" then what is is about, Denmark?

Steve Rogers was so patriotic that he volunteered for a dangerous experiment so that he could serve his country. His patriotism shaped his character. He's Captain America, not Captain Lukewarm American or Captain Global Citizen but that's Hollywood for you.

Johnston means he's not going to be one of those obnoxious "America is always right" types who constantly take potshots at the French, which is what a lot of people assume Cap is (and what Millar made Ultimate Cap into as a parody).

Captain America talks the talk and more importantly walks the walk. Thats whats makes him more than a flag waver. Being a real patriot requires more than flag waving and lip service. Cap is about the American idea not "America".

The film will probably be shaped by Hollywood materialism more than Hollywood liberalism.

My take on Johnston's remark was simply that he wasn't going to show the character thumping his chest/helmet in a manner saying "This(America) is what makes me right". I'm thinking the character is going to be about black/white good/evil.

No one debates the good/bad aspects of who to root for in WWII, there will even be the Howling Commandos(comprised here as an International strike force) for all parties to root for. Guess the Invaders are out in favor of the Commandos now.
The movie may even be just titled First Avenger for the global market.

I think Johnston's Cap, and by extension Whedon's, is going to be about a morally pure character who acts as a touchstone of honor and integrity. Not a political magnet to churn up ideologies.

Yeesh, what a mornic statement. WWII has "zero moral ambiguity" only because that's how Hollywood has depicted it. Or I guess nobody in Hollywood has ever heard of Dresden or Hiroshima? Any war can be depicted with "zero moral ambiguity" if that's your agenda, but for any war in the history of the world to be depicted that way is a big, fat, stinking lie.

I really don't see a huge difference in the moral ambiguity department between WWII and the war in Afghanistan. When you get into specifics, all wars are brutal. The real difference is whether they are sanitized in how the media or Hollywood chooses to depict them.

But I'll judge the movie on the screen, not via the quotes in the press. Maybe this guy is just expressing himself badly.

A little patriotism wouldn't hurt. I think Hollywood really is afraid to be as patriotic about America in its movies as it used to be. Maybe they're afraid it'll come across as obnoxious (it kind of did with that New York bit in "Spider-Man"), but there are certain heroes who really need it for their movie to be true to their spirit/history. I'm reminded of an article about "Superman Returns" speculating that this is why we never heard "truth, justice, and the American way" in "Superman Returns". Perry White only asks, "does he still stand for truth, justice...all that stuff"?, and I agree that this was a glaring omission. Superman without that "American Way" bit just doesn't feel right.

Alice Eve was considered for Peggy, I think she'd work better as Sharon.
