It's a natural - my immediate reaction to the new CA trailer was, in fact, "fuck yeah!"

More and more I think this one is going to be the big break-out this year.

This movie should hit a lot of notes that put people in the seats. Patriotism, the plunky underdog, beating up on Nazis, nostaglia for the (at least perceived) manichean conflict of WWII. It does have the misfortune of opening a week after HP, but even so I think something would have to go very wrong for this film not to make a boatload of cash.

Agreed. Even people that don't know comics know CA, unlike say Thor or Iron Man.

I hope so. The proximity to Potter has made me nervous for Cap finding a sustained audience and solid OW for about 6 months now.

Agreed. Even people that don't know comics know CA, unlike say Thor or Iron Man.

I wouldn't be to positive about how many general public people know of Captain America. He hasn't been the star of any cartoon, a few guest spots at best. So it's not like a generation from the last 20 or so years has grown up knowing him. Even FF and Iron Man had some 90's cartoons.

I'd wager more know of Aquaman than Captain America in general terms. Which is why I think Cap has so much to overcome. The marketing, star and director continues to give me promise though.

People know the idea of "Captain America" and would recognize the costume, but that's about as far as it goes. In some ways, actually, this is part of the problem, because the term "Captain America" tends to be associated with types of jingoistic "my country, right or wrong" sentiments that would be a huge turnoff in much of the world. The character's not like that, of course, but people don't know that.

Actually, I don't think it goes that far. At best, Cap is about as well known to the public at large as Captain Marvel.

Using a well respected piece of modern cinema is never a bad idea. Plus I love Indiana Jones and Raiders. Can't wait to see Captain America and how they borrowed ideas from there to help make this film.

I think most people at least recognize the name Captain America and would recognize the shield. Colbert has a shield hanging on his set, it's pretty visiable. Iron Man was pretty out of the mainstream in 08, but was extremely successful. This movie looks like a really kick ass movie, it's got everything that brings people to movies in the summer. I don't think it will have any problems, I think it will do what IronMan did. I say this as not a huge fan of Cap.

Joe Johnston was art director on Raiders and his Rocketeer had the same sense of derring-do fun, IMHO.

That costume design is goddamned brilliant, but nothing in this movie is nearly as promising as Hayley Atwell.

Everything I've seen about this flick works for me, and I've never found CA to be of more than passing interest...so I expect the crossover appeal may be considerable.

Yeah, you're not alone. I'm optimistic, though. I think Cap has an innate appeal that probably only requires a competent vehicle to be reasonably successful. I'm pretty sure this film will deliver at least that, maybe more.

I can understand a certain amount of trepidation regarding the casting of Evans (he's a tad familiar in the pejorative sense: not really a fresh face, not really a star), though I personally think he will do an excellent job.

Lots of movies are going to be released in close proximity to other movies this summer and lots of movies other than Harry Potter are going to be successful.

HP is not a nuclear bomb. Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, for example, was an enormous success - yet it was beaten in its second weekend at the box office by G-Force, a movie starring CG gerbils.

No (not a nuclear bomb), but it is the climactic film of a huge established franchise that could hurt a movie like Cap that is opening the following weekend. It's not an irrational concern, though I think Cap will do fine in any event.
