Captain America: Ed Brubaker bids adieu

In the winter of 2004, the Captain America title relaunched with Ed Brubaker at the helm. In the succeeding eight years, it's been renumbered and relaunched again (and is on the verge of another, as part of Marvel's whole "Marvel Now!" thing), with Brubaker at the helm throughout (as well as handling various spinoffs and ancillary titles like Captain America: Reborn, Secret Avengers, the Steve Rogers: Super-Soldier miniseries, and the Winter Soldier title that Brubaker will be continuing on for a few more issues). It's probably the most acclaimed Marvel Comics product during the last decade. #19, which came out today, marks the end of it.

The halcyon period has been over for a few years, I think. It certainly was never bad, but after Steve's return in Captain America: Reborn I think he had played out his biggest story for the character. The rest was just some more standard superhero stuff. The first 42 issues, in particular, are just one great story after another, from "Winter Soldier" to "The Death of Captain America". He made me a huge fan of Steve, and also of Sharon, Falcon, Black Widow, more minor presences like Spitfire, and revived numerous villains. And, of course, there's the return of Bucky, a story that had "bad idea" written all over it until it became one Marvel's greatest.

His influence on the Captain America property will be felt, one imagines, for years to come. Particularly with the nature of the second movie.

The final issue, without getting into spoilers, is the strongest in a good while. As a conclusion, it was unexpected, but it felt perfect, which is perhaps the best way to end things.

Should have quit while he was ahead. I certainly am not fond of him messing up Zemo after all the effort the TBs book went to building up the character.

I haven't read "Captain America" since Reborn. His "Winter Solider" is excellent though. I look very much forward to what Rick Remender has planned.

Wow. Was it really over 100 issues all told? I stuck with Bru to the very end, but freely admit that he peaked on the book with the 18-issue "Death of Captain America" arc.

The final arc was a bit of a mess. I seem to recall that Bru gave credited co-writer of the arc Cullen Bunn a list of threads to tie up and beats to hit and then let Bunn structure the story with Brubaker giving the script a final polish. This issue was a much stronger send-off and was written by Bru solo.

I'm taking a wait-and-see approch with Rememder/Romita Jr. If they get solid word of mouth, I'll catch up via trade, but won't be collecting monthly right off the bat. Frankly, this whole "Dimension Z" thing sounds a little weird.

i love Brubaker's run but to be honest the book was never the same after Bucky's Gulag arc. that was the last Cap story i enjoyed. the Bravo and Madame Hydra stuff was just meh. this last issue was great though.

Well, the "Gulag" arc was the last arc of the previous volume, which for all intents and purposes continued uninterupted in the Winter Soldier book.

I've long maintained that the main character of the previous volume was Bucky right from the start. Long before he became the new Cap and even before the reveal that he was still alive, he was the focus of the narrative. This currently ending volume (and the Steve Rogers: Super Soldier mini) is frankly the only time that Brubaker's narrative focus was actually on Steve Rogers.

I have found Brubaker to be quite dull over the last year or so and the overall quality of the book slid down. Now it did have a very high point to fall from so it was still one of the top books Marvel had but still it did slide down.
