Caprica & Stargate Universe... why so little excitement?

Two new sci-fi shows, both spin-offs of two of the most popular sci-fi shows ever and it seems like everyone is bracing for a car crash. There is no excitement about them, only cautious optimism. Why is that... are we so scared lightning won't strike twice (or in stargates case 3 times)? Are we burned out? Have they not given us anything to be excited about, peraps it's too soon?

Personaly, in my case I'm not thrilled myself... Caprica looks like a bad sci-fi soap and I'm getting an familiar and uncomfortable Voyager-like vibe from SGU. Yet I'm open to see if I'm wrong and hopeful I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thoughts?

Caprica: The prequel to the show that ended with complete finality. Neverminding how you feel about the BSG finale, it is undeniably over. So why go backwards?

Stargate Universe: I dunno. It was billed as this super dark show about people totally cut off who can never get home. Yet they're already saying RDA will do a cameo. What? :wtf:

I'm slightly interested in SGU, but Caprica does nothing for me at all.

Sorry, Atlantis certainly wasn't lightning striking twice. It didn't live up to even the not so high standards of later SG-1. My lack of enthusiasm for Universe is based directly on my feelings of the Stargate franchise in general. I'll watch it, and probably enjoy it to some extent, but frankly there is no reason to expect all that much out of it.

Caprica is a little different. Sure it's a spin-off of BSG, but it's so different in terms of focus that there's no reason to expect that I'll like it just because BSG is one of my all time favorites. I mean, one show is a giant aircraft carrier in space protecting the remenants of a destroyed civilization from killer robots. The other is something about lawyers and virtual reality and AI set planetside, 50+ years earlier. If the show was a spin-off that followed the story of Galactica or another Battlestar over the course of the first Cylon war, I would be a lot more excited.

I'm excited for Caprica. The pilot's gotten some good reviews. I've never been excited about Stargate so why would I start now? The ethical issues of creating the AI is what led to the cylons being created. The visual matrix is where the first "cylon" exists. It's fascinating. All for love of a dead child, humanity will be obliterated.

Gotta answer b4 someone spoils the BSG finale for me!;)(still on my dvr)

Caprica-I'll check it out because the writing may be clever(it will have to be to work).

Stargate U: The trailer I saw looked very dark indeed. Since Voyager had a tendency to be somewhat insipid at times, I'm willing to go along for the ride in the hopes of a better project.

Why little excitement? Only so many hours in the day, and the way shows I love keep dying off I refuse to get excited about anything, anymore.

I have the kiss of death-be glad I'm NOT excited about these shows-maybe they stand a chance!:p

Caprica: Not interested. BSG pretty much said everything that had to be said about that universe, and unlike a show like Babylon 5, never dropped any nuggets that could be the groundwork for a new series. Anything else is superfluous.

SG: Universe. I'll check it out. It's Stargate after all. It's had more hits than misses in my opinion. I just hope it's not trying to be dark because it's trendy. I also hope it's not trying to betray what has come before because a few disgruntled fans made fun of it and flocked lemming-like to BSG.

Personally, I think a lot of people are setting their expectations low in the hope that these shows might surprise them...

I have my reservations about Caprica, but I think the key to that show won't be its premise but its characters and whether or not audiences can give a damn about what happens to them.

I missed the boat with both Stargate: SG1 and Stargate: Atlantis, but hopefully I can get onboard with Stargate: Universe from the very beginning without having to know every single plot twist from its predecessors.

Both are really gonna have to be special to overcome their predecessors.

Yeah, Caprica, NuBSG world is done. I feel the way about BSG the way I felt about after LOTR:ROTK. I'm done with the universe.

Atlantis wound up a whole lot of nothing, so why expect greatness from SG: Universe.

Well, all the excitement in the sci-fi sphere is currently being sucked up by Trek XI and a load of assorted other sci-fi films.

I'm sure once these shows are out they'll get their time in the sun. I'm looking forward to Caprica, but Stargate Universe is just another show from a franchise that at least to me, hasn't lived up to its potential. I might give it a go, but after Atlantis (the definition of "meh" in my book), it'll be hard to be enthusiastic about any more Stargate.

couldn't have said it better myself :techman:

Caprica - No real excitement. This isn't like B5 where we saw what would happen years down the road and the story was about getting there. BSG began with all the planets getting nuked and then went downhill from there. The finale was a complete and total finale, no more story to tell. Going backwards from there to lead into it is completely pointless and screams - to me - of desperation. As in "OMG, we've killed the only show we have left, how can we have a spin-off now?"

StarGate - No interest. At all. SG1 was the show I liked. Atlantis had a brilliant beginning and pretty good first season. The writers coasted from there. No originality, whatsoever, afterwards. Each season got progressively worse, until we had an absymal final season. I cheered when it was finally cancelled. And now we have yet another spin-off, and it's from the exact same writing staff who butchered Atlantis? And the TV movies, which have been among the worst sci-fi-Saturday-night-films yet? Seriously, what's the fucking point?

The only way you'll get me interested in SGU is if they fire the entire writing and producing staff and bring in completely new talent.

I think Stargate needed to go away for awhile say five or ten years and then return. Still I will give it a shot.

Caprica holds a tad more interest for me. Will we see our "angels" make a cameo in this series?

Caprica's been in the works for a couple of years now. It's not some last minute panic. I like character based story. Those centurions didn't become self aware and monotheistic by accident.

I'm excited about Universe as I loved both Stargate shows. My only worry is they won't have that singular character that makes me love the show so much. Daniel Jackson in SG-1 and Rodney McKay in Atlantis.

As to Caprica, well, the final 10 episodes left such a bad taste in my mouth I dread what they came up with for the prequel.

I'm really looking forward to "Caprica". I think it certainly has the potential to be great (some great actors, great setting, interesting topics, very talented people in the background).
But I'm not getting my hopes up so as to think it might actually take over from nuBSG as my favorite show. Part of me is a little cautious because I don't want to go into it with overblown expectations.

As for Stargate, well, none of the other shows did anything for me, so I'm not really bothered about this one either.

Because both the shows they spin off from, are rather bad, if not outright abysmal.

The Stargate shows are meaningless happy-go-lucky junk dribble, and nBSG is just plain horrible across the board (not to mention not popular at all; hardly anyone ever watched).

So spinoffs aren't going to be much to look forward to.

Yeah, Caprica, NuBSG world is done. I feel the way about BSG the way I felt about after LOTR:ROTK. I'm done with the universe.

I'm actually finding myself enjoying digging into the Unfinished Tales and Books of Lost Tales even more these days, and am definitely looking forward to seeing how The Hobbit will be brought to the big screen.

Knowing how something ends is rarely the best part of stories, there's usually far more interesting things to be learned about where a character came from originally.

Concerning Caprica: BSG was a soap opera from day one. It only became a problem (and the subject of fanboy whining) when the writing admittedly started slipping and it became obvious as to what it was. If the caliber of writing is up to snuff, I think Caprica could be a very interesting and enjoyable show.

I plan on initially watching both, but I'm more excited about Caprica than Universe...yes BSG is over, but I'm interested to see how life in the 12 Colonies is portrayed. Other than a few isolated scenes here and there, we never really got to see the 12 Colonies at their height.

As for Universe, Robert Carlyle and Ming-Na are probably the main reasons I'll be watching. If I had to make a prediction though, I think Universe will have more longevity than Caprica...it may not necessarily be better, but it'll probably have a longer run.

What is the point of Caprica? The main theme of BSG is over so what can be possibly done with Caprica?
I believe this is why the reception or anticipation is so lukewarm.. BSG make some mighty footsteps which Caprica has to fill and nobody is sure it can.

Stargate Universe.. the xth version of a starship show where they encounter Aliens and problems of the week to be solved under a time limit in the last 5-10 minutes?
How many did we already see? Together with the mediocre quality of the entire franchice (with few really top notch episodes) and a penchant for real stinkers means people, or at least me, have little interest in the show.
This show really is the epitome of writer's laziness and not being able/not wanting to leave the comfort zone which leads to very boring shows.
