Yea, when I first saw Donna, in The Runaway Bride, I couldn't stand her screeching, and I was so relieved she didn't stay. Then when she was announced as Companion after Martha, I was really disappointed. Then when she actually appeared in her first regular episode, I fell in love with her character, and was so happy to have her (And all the more sad to see her go, and what they did to her)
I see the Paternoster gang as sort of like Lethbridge-Stuart (both the original and his daughter) and UNIT, sort of recurring supporting characters who are allies of, but rarely travel with-the Doctor and are not really 'tied' to a particular Doctor. River and to a degree Jack sort of fit that too.
No to me, the third Doctor was stuck on earth and helped out UNIT. But the Paternoster gang comes off as comic relief and really vey useful in helping the Doctor solve any problems.
The Doctor was only stranded on Earth with UNIT for three seasons, but UNIT and the Brig were there as occasional support for another four on either side (and that's without the pre-UNIT Web of Fear, and counting Zygons as part of season 12 while forgetting about the Brig-less UNIT stories in season 13. Add them in and the Brig/UNIT were there a few times each year for 9 seasons. No wonder it was a shock when the Doctor didn't even bother to mention them when back on present-day Earth).
They did, very briefly, in the Eighth Doctor movie (Chang Lee).I think they should do an oriental companion, I'm surprised it's not been done.
