Capaldi can't be The Doctor???

Back on subject, sort of, I saw Peter Capaldi as Richelieu in the premiere episode of The Musketeers on BBC America this past week. So now I've heard him doing an English accent... while playing a Frenchman.

Hmm, I wonder if going with his natural Scottish accent as the Doctor was partly done as a way of differentiating him from Richelieu, given how close together the roles are in time.

The difference is that Amy had quite a meaty and substantial arc, while the anniversary series focused on the Doctor himself, with a companion, Clara, who had more of a supporting role. I'm almost certain that now that the 50th anniversary is behind us, the balance will be restored and that we will spend more time focusing on Clara.

I think this to, like I said I did actually like Clara half the time anyway, but hopefully she will be focused on a bit more now.

So far, Amy and Roryhave been my favorite new series companions. Mostly because they're the only ones that consistently stood up to the Doctor and interacted with him as an equal.

I wonder if Capaldi will be around for another companion after Jenna/Clara (Not sure if the Danny Pink character will even be a companion or be expanded into one like Mickey and Rory were).

I wouldn't actually mind an alien companion (Not necesarilly someone in makeup but somebody near-human). Both Tom Baker (after Harry and Sarah that is) and Peter Davison did OK with companions who were, for the most part, not from earth.

Indeed... the Fourth Doctor didn't have any Earth-native companions between Sarah Jane and Tegan, a span of over four years. And the Second Doctor went two years with no companions from present-day Earth; Jamie and Victoria were from the past and Zoe was from the future. Before that, the First Doctor spent a brief span with no contemporary companions; after Ian and Barbara left, he just had Vicki and Steven, both from the future, and then briefly Katarina from Ancient Troy and Sara Kingdom from the year 4000.

In the new series, we've had a couple of semi-companions from the future, namely Jack Harkness and River Song, and a few one-shot companions not from present-day Earth -- Astrid Peth was nominally an alien, Jackson Lake was from the past, and Adelaide Brooke was from 2059 -- but yeah, all the regular companions have been from present-day Great Britain. It would be nice to mix that up a little.

Adam another one shot companion was also from the future, but perhaps the Doctor didn't want another gobby Australian onboard. ;)

But sure it might be nice to get a companion who wasn't from the modern day.

The plan with Clara was to originally have her from Victorian times, though that was changed when Moffat decided to cast Coleman as Oswin in Asylum of the Daleks and make her someone who would show up in past, present and future.

He was more sort of the Master's companion, though.

Come to think of it, the Master sort of has his own set of companions, or at least, co-plotters who usually end up on the Doctor's side by the end. Goth, Mitch, Chang, Kameleon, Lucy, the crazy bartender from the Daemons etc.

Well, they were less co-plotters and more pawns to the Master, anyway. Hardly equals (though they may have thought differently), and mostly just a means to an end, which generally meant defeat at the hands of the Doctor. And don't forget Glitz!

But yeah, I also think it's high time for a non-present-day-Earth-girl companion. I've been watching a couple serials featuring Leela, Jamie and Zoe, and whenever they were on contemporary Earth, they did at most a couple fish out of water jokes and got on with it. Should be even less of a problem today - Moffat's got a sort-of team going with the Patternoster gang, but it's not like they actually travel with him all that much.

I guess Asians are doing okay. The Doctor's next companion should come from a human subgroup that's really underrepresented: Neanderthals.

Ghost Light and the novels Timewyrm Genesis and Only Human feature Neanderthal supporting characters, although we sort of got a "Caveman" companion with Leela.

I see the Paternoster gang as sort of like Lethbridge-Stuart (both the original and his daughter) and UNIT, sort of recurring supporting characters who are allies of, but rarely travel with-the Doctor and are not really 'tied' to a particular Doctor. River and to a degree Jack sort of fit that too.

I think it will be nice going back to an older Doctor, I think after Tennent they got showhorned into having younger actors to just keep the romance angle in the story, the Doctor can protect and be a friend to a companion, but they don't always have to make gooey eyes at each other.

No to me, the third Doctor was stuck on earth and helped out UNIT. But the Paternoster gang comes off as comic relief and really vey useful in helping the Doctor solve any problems.

The Doctor was only stranded on Earth with UNIT for three seasons, but UNIT and the Brig were there as occasional support for another four on either side (and that's without the pre-UNIT Web of Fear, and counting Zygons as part of season 12 while forgetting about the Brig-less UNIT stories in season 13. Add them in and the Brig/UNIT were there a few times each year for 9 seasons. No wonder it was a shock when the Doctor didn't even bother to mention them when back on present-day Earth).

Yea, when I first saw Donna, in The Runaway Bride, I couldn't stand her screeching, and I was so relieved she didn't stay. Then when she was announced as Companion after Martha, I was really disappointed. Then when she actually appeared in her first regular episode, I fell in love with her character, and was so happy to have her (And all the more sad to see her go, and what they did to her)
