Orci said in the past that he is a fan of the books, and that he intends to use elements from the books in the new movie.

Let's see if we can make up a list, I'll start:

The scene with the Vulcan kids bullying Spock seemed to be straight out of Yesteryear to me. The kid who played young Spock even looked the same.

The Enterprise being built on Earth, as I've noted before, is very reminiscent of the details of the refit of the saucer section as described in the pre-TMP novel A Flag Full of Stars.
