short copper-skinned aliens: Journey To Babel (1967)
Dayen: Stardate Magazine #11 (1986)
Ithenite: Infinity’s Prism: A Less Perfect Union (2008)

The name Ithenite actually comes from the Enterprise episode Azati Prime and the idea that this is the name of the species of the copper dude from Journey to Babel comes from the early scripts for the Demons/Terra Prime story. So while, yes it was ultimately in the novels they were named, the name does technically come from the show.

Sargon’s species: Return To Tomorrow (1968)
Sargonian: Ex Machina (2004)

Also known as Arretian in various sources, including The Buried Age and Watching the Clock. Arret was the name of Sargon's planet in the script and the Star Trek Concordance. I initially resisted using it, because it's Terra spelled backward and that's kinda silly, but eventually I decided it was better for clarity/consistency to go with that name.

hostile grey-skinned aliens: Silent Enemy (2002)
Mute: Rise Of The Federation: A Choice Of Futures (2013)

No, "Mute" is a nickname/slur used by those who fear them. They're eventually called the Vertians, since I chose to identify them with the mute civilization of Gamma Vertis IV mentioned in "The Empath."

And Star Trek Online calls them the Elachi, though I'm not sure how a species without speech has a phonetic name for itself (see also Horta and various others).

The Kalar/Kaylar from TOS - "The Cage" were designated in ENT - Rise of the Federation: Tower of Babel as a subspecies/tribe/caste of the Zami, native to Raij'hl IV.

The builders of the mind transfer devices in TOS - "Turnabout Intruder" were designated by various 22nd century races as the Anu'anshee, Krytallans, and Irakua in ENT - What Price Honor?.

Magen, one of the Elysian councilors in TAS - "The Time Trap", was named a Cygnian, the race mentioned in TOS - "Tomorrow is Yesterday", in SCE - Where Time Stands Still and ENT - The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing.

The sabre-toothed turtle "Rigellians" (two Ls) from Star Trek: The Motion Picture were specifically designated the Chelon in TTN - Taking Wing. The Chelons are from Raij'hl III.

The natives of Bre'el IV in TNG - "Deja Q" were named Bre'ella in Articles of the Federation.

The unseen builders of the extremely old ruins on Tagus III in "Qpid" were seen and named the Imotru in TNG - The Q Continuum: Q-Space and clarified as a separate evolution from the modern, also not seen onscreen, Taguans.

Federation President Jaresh-Inyo, from DS9 - "Homefront", was named a member of the Grazerites in Articles of the Federation.

The Breen were clarified as a confederacy of several species, with Typhon Pact - Zero Sum Game naming the Amoniri, Fenrisal, Paclu, and Silwaan. Typhon Pact - Plagues of Night further identified the Vironat, and Section 31 - Disavowed identified the Silgov.

Borg designation Species 6339 from VOY - "Infinite Regress" was named Octanti in Star Trek Online.

Vosk's species, debuting in ENT - "Zero Hour", was named Na'kuhl in the script but not onscreen. DTI - Watching the Clock cements the name.

The human-shaped bead-wearing "Rigelians" (one L) from ENT - "Demons" were specifically named the Jelna in ENT - Rise of the Federation: Tower of Babel. The Jelna are native to Raij'hl V.

^It's possible that Hengist from "Wolf in the Fold" was a Zami Rigelian, though I tend to assume he was a human who came from Rigel IV (part of a human immigrant community there).

^"Solanae" for the solanogen-based beings from "Schisms" is almost as problematical. "Solanogen" was the term used by the Federation for a substance connected to this species that the Federation had never met before. So it couldn't possibly be connected to the aliens' name for themselves. Unless "Solanae" is meant to be the Federation's name for them.

The aliens from STTMP were given names on the inner sleeve of the soundtrack LP. I always thought that was an interesting thing with that LP, you got all the different aliens, and photos to go along with the name.

But the First Federation, I know that they've appeared in novels before (I think "Gulliver's Fugitives" is their oldest appearance), but was there name only given just in Seekers, or was it mentioned in another book? Or did the other books just call the First Federation?

Thanks guys. I've added the names Arretian, Bre'ella, Cygnian, Grazerite, Na'kuhl, Srivani, Vertian, Amoniri, Fenrisal, Paclu, Silwaan, Vironat, Silgov, Jelna and Zami.

I'm not sure if the Rigellians/Chelon are a canon species either. As far as I know, they were created for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, but were never actually seen in any version of the movie.

I'll add the names from Star Trek Online, despite the fact that STO is not a "book" by any definition of the word. STO is the only MMORPG that I know of where entire species are sometimes removed from the game during updates, so I don't know how long the Gekli, Elachi, Octanti and Solanae are going to be part of the game.

I think they must be in the crowd of aliens at the Starfleet HQ tram station when Kirk arrives. I see a bunch of the movie aliens there. In this image, for instance, there are two trams near the middle of the image, and there's a crowd assembled to the right of them, between the tram with open doors and the big tan column. In the middle of that group, I can barely make out what might be Rigellian (Chelon) robes and headdresses.

There are lots of gatherings between the tram and tan column, but I don't see anyone with a white robe and a black chest.

Federation President Jaresh-Inyo, from DS9 - "Homefront", was named a member of the Grazerites in Articles of the Federation.
Huh, was I the first to write that one down?

Anyhow, I didn't actually come up with that, that came from the script for "Homefront."

Nice list! :techman:

Although I believe they are commonly accepted as Caitians, if I remember correctly the Last Unicorn Games RPG referred to the felinoid aliens in attendance at Kirk's trial in TVH as Regulans.

Crewman Dax from TUC was referred to as a Zeosian in the novelization, whereas the script apparently indicated he was a (ahem) Megazoid.

The name Aurelian was never used onscreen, but it was apparently mentioned in the "Yesteryear" script, and then was used in Log One and subsequent novels.

I believe I have actually read a third name somewhere for the copper-skinned aliens from "Journey to Babel". I think it might have been Hemanite.... hmm, after checking MB, it turns out this is from "Survivors", but the description given doesn't include "copper skin". Since they were mentioned as being diminutive in stature, and commonly wearing "flat topped tassel caps", I probably thought of fezzes, and then associated them with the JtB aliens when it might not have been intended. (And looking at some JtB screencaps, now I see that the caps they were wearing weren't even fezzes! Oops!)

Thanks. I've added Aurelians and Zeosians, and I'll try to find out exactly which book the Regulans are from.

Because you can only edit for a certain time after posting. ;)

Also... when has STO ever removed an entire species from gameplay? I'm not sure I remember any instances of this... unless you mean the "manufactured" species seen in the old star clusters?

I don't see anything clearly either, but I do see a figure with some hint of a white robe and some kind of dark adornments around the head and shoulders. Maybe the screencap I linked to isn't the best one. It's really just a few pixels, but it seems more consistent with a Rigellian than anything else I see in the scene. And really, they must've been there somewhere. That's the scene that all the non-Starfleet-uniformed aliens were designed for.

Oops, my mistake. Though as far as I can tell, Articles of the Federation on 27 May 2005 was indeed the first to write down "Grazerite".

TTN - Orion's Hounds had Gum Nebula species call the species of the spaceborne crystalline entity from TNG - "Datalore" and "Silicon Avatar" the Branchers.

Orion's Hounds also has the Farpoint entities referred to as star-jellies, skymounts, or astrocoelerantes.

Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Bajor: Fragments and Omens established the human scientific name Draco berengarius for the Berengarian dragons referenced in TOS - "This Side of Paradise" and ENT - "Bound".
