I seen an episode of Start trek TNG many years ago which featured an unidentified heavily armed ship appearing briefly then it gets destroyed by the enterprise in the first couple of volleys. Riker is in command at the time. The ship is black I think and it never explains who they are. Which episode is this? I cant find it.

I’m not sure, I think it was a later episode. The ship literally appears once for a few seconds and then is destroyed. Its a big black mean looking ship and they state its heavily armed, you think there is going to be a big battle but Riker orders the enterprise to open fire and ship just blows up.
I was going to say The Survivors. Picard is down on the surface with Kevin Uxbridge, & Riker must fight off the Husnuck creation he is sending at them, but maybe I got that wrong. Was Picard there for that one all the times it appeared?

It's Unification P1 alright.
There's also that Yridian ship that blew up quite quickly in The Chase. But if it's Riker calling the shots here then it's Unification we're talking about. I liked that two parter but it's guilty of cramming too much in there and the whole mystery/battle thing on D was a bit of a damp squib.

sounds like it might be the episode "The Survivors" (Season 3, Episode 3) where the enterprise was attacked by an unknown heavily armoured warship.
^ The warship in The Survivors wasn't black, but it was a redress of the same model.
