Both, and then some.

Try this - hold both hands in front of you, fingers together, palms facing away.

Separate the little finger on the right hand and the thumb on the left hand. Return.

Separate the ring and little fingers on the right hand from the others and the thumb and forefinger on the left hand from the others. Return.

Separate the middle, ring and little fingers on the right hand from the others and the thumb, forefinger and middle fingers on the lefthand from the others. Return

I'm no good at sport, an unimpressive musician, my motor coordination is average at best, but I can do that ! :)

I learned this as a teenager watching TAS, with my right hand. Years later in college, I taught myself to do it with my left hand. It was much more difficult. Now that I recall, masturbation started the same way...

Now if you jam something between the proper fingers it will come much faster.

The salute, I mean.

^ :guffaw:

As to the question: both hands. It's so easy for me to do that I just can't fathom why some people can't do it. :)

You know, Shatner has famously said he can't do it. Even going so far as making them tie his fingers with fishing wire so he could do it in Search for Spock. But I found a photo of him from TOS, brushing the hair out of his eyes, and his hand was in that exact position, just backwards.

IE: Shatner lied. :p (That's even when I named the file; shatner_lied_llap.jpg) lol.

Both hands, but arthritis makes it trickier these days.

Technique-wise, I think the trick is that you're keeping the outer fingers together, not that you're separating the two middle ones.

Um, er, the uh, yeah the salute thingy. :shifty:

I can do it with both hands, although it's much easier to do with the left hand, probably because I played guitar for a while in my teens.

Man don't skim through this thread without looking at the thread title.... one could get the wrong impression as to what's being discussed.

I can do it with both hands, rigorously and fast.... took many years to "master" it.

^

Both hands (the salute, people), and have been doing so since I saw Leonard Nimoy demonstrate it on a documentary when I was about 5.

But it seems to be getting more painful the older I get!

Well I learned by first taking my middle and index finger forward while the other two remain upwards. Once you get those muscles stretched and worked out the right way, it's easy.

No, unfortunately.

That hurts worse than the uniform.
-Bones, Journey to Babel

Thank you for including the correct quote from the episode. So many people don't realize the "accent" quote is from a fan to George Takei while stopped at an intersection in L.A.

I can do it with both hands, and have done so since I realized that T'Pau used her left, while Spock his right, in Amok Time. I never had a problem with it. In fact, it's easier for me to do the Vulcan salute than to arrange my fingers to use Spider-Man's webshooters.

My one complaint about the salute; far too many people do it with the thumb pressed against the hand. It frustrates me to see so many people drawing attention to themselves by doing it wrong. Stick your thumb out, people! Please!

Both. Strangely, I have mild arthritis in both hands, and doing the Vulcan salute in my right hand takes the pain away.

Doesn't work for the left, though.
