Activision has this week given a hint to the future direction of its Call of Duty franchise with a number of Web domain registrations. The publisher registered callofdutyfuturewarfare.com, along with callofdutyfuturewarfare2.com and callofdutyfuturewarfare3.com on Tuesday, along with a number of variations on that theme.

The publisher also registered several other "warfare" domains without any Call of Duty branding: spacewarfare2.com, spacewarfare3.com, secretwarfare2.com and secretwarfare3.com. Advancedwarfare2.com, and advancedwarfare3.com were also registered at the same time.
Registering the names of websites doesn't really mean much but it does give us some insight into some of the ideas that the developers might have. One thing is for sure, despite gutting the developers who made Call of Duty what it is, Activision sure is chugging along with the games

Sure are they pushing forward but now that many key personel have left and the (probably) tightened release schedule (for most publishers "When it's done!" means very little) i am in sincere doubt about the quality of the game.

Especially Modern Warfare 2 had an amazing mission design and visual quality together with an entertaining storyline and to this day i like to pull it out and play some missions even though i played it through and know the story (this is very rare for me with games that have a storyline).

I'm assuming you're referring to the trouble with Infinity Ward, in which case you needn't worry. IW won't be making any more CoD games. In fact, it's very likely that IW will close in the the next few months.

Sledgehammer have signed a deal with Activision to produce a 2011 CoD game, so assuming it does well, it will either be them or Treyarch who produce any of the games linked with these domain names.

'advanced warfare' may not be anything too sci-fi. might just be stuff like MW has but a bit more advanced. not like pulse rifles, photon grenades and mech suits...

'space warfare' on the other hand certainly suggests something like BF2142...

A space marine version of CoD could be cool, a bit like Halo without the aliens and a lot more "realistic" weaponry and mission situations.

The CoD series has done everything from WW2 until present day to death, and unless they go in a new direction anything new is going to feel like more mission packs for old games.

Conan O'brien already thought of it

I'm amazed Activision haven't found a way to make buying some sort of non-standard peripheral mandatory to play Call of Duty yet.

'Call of Duty' in set in Space?

Battlefield 2142 was still on Earth with combat on the ground and aircraft in the skies.

this game seems to have gotten the FPS into space:
"Shattered Horizon" FPS in zero G. = Vista ONLY
this in-game footage trailer rocks! It's all at a in-orbit spacestation
Raid on Moondust Trailer [HD] (music only, no FX or dialogue)
this gameplay footage video is around moon fragments in Earth's orbit without gravity
Certainly Star Trek TV series or movies have never come close to any small arms combat in space like this except the crew vs. Borg on the exterior of the ENT-E in First Contact. Doubtful we'll see ST:Online even try.

Call of Duty with a space locale will either a copycat of Lost Planet 2 or
I"m doubtful machine gun weapons will be used on a spaceship but more of a lunar base or planet-based station and tunnel complex like Doom/Quake,
or on the planet LV-426 colonist's living quarters and atmosphere processing station in
Aliens: Colonial Marines,
players are part of a United States Colonial Marine squad and must prepare to face an Aliens assault more intense and horrific than ever before. Players must destroy the enemy with classic Aliens weaponry ranging from pulse rifles to flamethrowers as well as brand-new equipment.
I'd like to see zero-G in some places as well as artificial gravity like a centrifuge, just like Clarke's Discovery One in 2001 used.
