Calamity Si Trek Comic Adaptations

So I've recently been reviewing some old 1980's comic book covers by DC and also some of the more recent ones by IDW. They've inspired me to replicate some of the awesome scenes using my humble Sketchup models.

Here's the first of what I'm calling my 'Calamity Si Trek Comic Adaptations'.

Number 1: DC's Mirror Universe issue called the 'Tantalus Trap': http://www.comicvine.com/star-trek-12-the-tantalus-trap/4000-155151/

I'll admit, I've always been amused by how ridiculously oversized the Excelsior seems in that cover. ;)

Well, comic artists don't always seem to place any priority on size accuracy.

Yeah I've got DC's Mirror Universe Sage myself tucked up safely in storage back home...terrific graphic novel. A proper 'old skool' romp! I particularly liked the humour in it - for example when Kirk tries to show off the Excelsior's firepower in the Mirror Universe and destroys a seemingly 'abandoned' old space station, only to have Capt. Styles blast him for blowing up his ship that was docked there! I always wondered why they got rid of Styles' moustache though...it seemed to me a distinguising feature that would have served well in the comic, where both he and Kirk had the same hair colour....

Anywho, here's my second entry, taken from the same '85 Miror Universe Saga series. The original drawn image is not a cover, but a screen from within the comic. Apologies for the bad quality, but it's the best image of it I could find. I think this particular screen is from the issue #9: "...Promises To Keep" ...

very cool scene there :) Maybe next you can do some of the Excelsior scenes from the Ash's of Eden TPB? :)

You made these using Sketchup?! Are you some sort of a sorcerer?

Lol, yeah. Everyone thinks Sketchup is a really rubbish and basic program, but you can do some really good stuff with it. Like any tool, it's how you use it, I guess. I remember once watching a Youtube vid of a guy who made an AMAZING picture of a sports car, using nothing but MS Paint!

Ok, here's my latest offering: This one is taken from IDW Comic's short story called 'Jellico', but I have subsituted the USS Cairo for the USS Xavier (as I often like to do). I chose this because I thought it was a cool little scrap with interesting angles and one of the few pictures I do featuring actors. I managed to find the original shot of Captain Jellico that the artist obviously copied from. For his first officer, Commander Leslie Wong, I used the likeness of actress Stephanie Jacobsen as I thought she would best fit the role.
