Buried Age and Families on Starships (Destiny, Titan spoiler)

Ok, thanks. That seems to be a pretty common rank for most of the CMOs that we've seen.

Erm? The most common rank appears to be full Commander (Crusher, Pulaski, Boyce, Piper, Kaz). McCoy and Lense were promoted to full Commander, and Bashir and Selar were promoted to Lt Commander (at least I think Selar was).

Oh, I thought McCoy, Crusher, Bashir were all Lt. Cmrds., but I guess not.

I think he was promoted offscreen between WYLB and Avatar. He was definitely an LC in Abyss.

Bralik appears in SoD as well. I wished I could have done more with her but I was askeeered. She's got a big personality and I didn't want her to dominate the scenes she was in.

Oh, I thought McCoy, Crusher, Bashir were all Lt. Cmrds., but I guess not.

For the duration fo TOS, McCoy certainly was LtCmdr; he got promoted to Cmdr in time for the first movie, and was supposed to retire at that rank in ST6, but apparently stayed on the Starfleet wagon and proceeded to some sort of Admiral ultimately. Crusher always wore the three Cmdr pips in TNG; novels haven't promoted her past that yet, I believe. And Bashir started with Lt (jg) but gained Lt during DS9, and then (as indicated above) was promoted to LtCmdr in the novels.

Voyager's unnamed human CMO in "Caretaker" was a LtCmdr, too. (What's his name in the novels?)

As for other onscreen CMOs, the exact ranks of Piper and Boyce were not given, and there are many ways to interpret the uniforms and their rank braid in the respective pilot episodes...

Hmm... Another question about the novels that I never thought of before.

Did S.C.E / CoE suggest that Elizabeth Lense would have been the CMO of the Lexington in "Explorers"? The episode itself doesn't make that claim, even though Memory Alpha once again jumps to conclusions. Judging by the episode dialogue alone, Lt(jg) Lense could have been a junior doctor aboard the ship, or perhaps not even a practicing physician at all, since her work reputedly consisted of "collecting samples".

Lense was the CMO and a practicing sawbones aboard the da Vinci, of course. But that could have been upward career mobility, rather than a step down from a previous CMO status on a bigger ship.

It's a bit embarrassing that I don't remember anything much about Lense's status as described in her Dominion War story... Was she CMO there (several years after "Explorers")? What rank did she hold at the time?

^^^
IIRC, Lense was indeed CMO on the Lexington. I'm not exactly sure, but I seem to recall that due to all the ship's casualties during the Dominion War and the resulting personal trauma, she requested a posting to a ship with a less combat-orientated mission profile when the war was over.

Lense was indeed CMO of the Lexington by the time the Dominion War rolled around. As Tirius said, she requested the transfer to the smaller da Vinci after the traumas of the war. (See in particular Hard Crash, Oaths, and War Stories Book 1.)

Right, thanks!

Hmm. Was Lense a LtCmdr already when CMOing the Lexington, then?
