Buffyverse question about demons and dinosaurs

EJA

Fleet Captain
My knowledge of the Buffyverse is a little rusty these days, having been away from it for so long, but this is something that used to occur to me fairly often. According to the mythology, demons inhabited Earth aeons before the rise of humanity, right? We've occasionally seen some of these ancient, pureblood demons, or "Old Ones", on BtVS and AtS, and they often bear some resemblance to dinosaurs, e.g. gigantic, reptillian beasts. I do recall a line in the BtVS episode "Graduation Day, Part 2" where a character researching the pureblood demon the Mayor aims to transform into reads from a scientist's journal; the scientist had discovered the demon's remains and thought it might be some new kind of dinosaur, at which another character responds "A demon?" I have heard that in the AtS comic book series published by IDW (which is considered a canonical continuation of the TV show), the gang run into a demon who looks like a T-Rex. Here we have a few instances where characters make connections between demons and dinosaurs. Personally, I'd hate it if they made out that dinosaurs were demons; I don't know, it just seems simply too ludicrous to even contemplate. What do other people reckon?

I dunno, it actually seems to make sense to me. At least maybe it's possible that dinosaurs and demons existed simultaneously on Earth.

Some dinosaurs may have been demons, but I doubt all of them were. More likely, as RoJo suggested, there was at least some simultaneous existence between the two groups. Since fossils of demons would seem to be rather rare, perhaps only a small number of demons still existed on Earth when dinosaurs arose.

Well, we know from Illyria and the Deeper Well that those old and ancient demons didn't die the way we're used to. They may not even have physical remains.

I just dislike the notion that any kind of dinosaurs were supernatural beings with magical abilities. Something about it just screams WRONG to me.

Demons don't necessarily have to have magical powers. We've met plenty of demons who were nothing more than angry monsters.

Why would this notion bother you or wrong for that matter? Perhaps this is just Joss's interpenetration of what he thought some dinosaurs are. I personally have no problem with that take.

I got the impression that those demons existed alongside the dinos, but were separate. It makes (Buffyverse) sense that the demons around at that time would have forms suited to a world filled with giant lizards.

Must have been boring for the demons. "Let's make a deal: I save you from that fatal goring, and you give me your soul." "<SNORT>" "...so, when are you guys planning on getting around to evolving sentience?"

And here's another though: demon-possessed dinosaurs. Because the only thing that could improve on a T-Rex is demonic strength and cunning.

Dinosaurs were probably nothing more than random wildlife to the demons, like the bunnies that live in my backyard.

But are bunnies really just random wildlife? Some might say that bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes...

I'm thinking that a pre-human demon age in the Buffyverse would mean a period of time ending shortly prior to the rise of human civilisation (5,000 to 10,000 years ago) and beginning, at the very earliest, at the dawn of our species (, so maybe 100,000 - 150,000 years ago, though probably much later).

I don't know about all dinosaurs, but I'm pretty sure there's something demonic about Barney.

From the Angel comic book.

Very relevant to the topic at hand.

Considering the eviscerated jackrabbit I found on the sidewalk this morning, I'm starting to suspect that Anya is alive somewhere in Phoenix.

I think demons and dinosaurs, Christianity's garden of Eden and the idea of the demons being cleansed from the earth can all sit side by side in the mythology and give no specific problems
