Buffy TVS Reboot Confirmed

I´m not that excited because for me Buffy was a one of a kind show. Yes...the reboot is done by its original creator, but that doesn´t nessecarily mean that he can do "the magic" again. It´s difficult to repeat a "miracle". Does he still have that..."spark"...that made Buffy a success? We will see.

This new Buffy doesn't have to "equal or surpass" the original, though; it just has to succeed based on its own merits.

Are there no original ideas going around any more, that we need these remakes instead?

Actually the last original idea was "To many Cooks" on Adult Swim. Still you are right in that we need less remakes because their are plenty of ways to make old idea's feel new. I worry about this one being able to do it. Even if it's good I especially have doubts of it even being in the same league as the first show. I wonder if solid but average version might be even worst than a total trainwreck?

Well, Buffy wasn't perfect. There were plenty of areas a new show could improve upon. As I noted above, they could always make Xander better. I mean they couldn't possibly make him any worse.

Reboots arguably provide a better jumping-on spot for a new generation of TV viewers.

Rule of thumb: if you fondly remember the previous version of something, you are NOT the target demo for the reboot. :)

We will see. It's possible the new show might be set in the 80's. I never loose hunger for nostiga feedings.

Nonetheless, if things start to go south for said show the producers will start larding it up with call-backs and plotlines that only geezers attached to the original will get excited about.

The show only ended in 2002 I think. That's not to old. I don't think 42 is quite a geezer.

The ending of the original series was great. The themes of female empowerment against the male dominated Watchers who were limiting the number of Slayers at any one time was well done and left the Buffy Universe with a multitude of Slayers.

A continuation of the series probably would serve to undermine this ending out of necessity--not to say it can't be done (it was done in the comics) especially if Geller returned as a Watcher or something similar. However, I think a reboot would be much more appealing as it would serve to reach a new generation of young men and women and have the opportunity to deal with more contemporary themes.

We find out, at the last moment, there was an all woman society that tried to guide the Slayer instead, forging the Scythe, before the Watchers forced them into hiding.

Let's actually have something of that, given the entire council, their collective libraries etc were all destroyed in Season 7.

Some commenters on The Mary Sue had an intriguing idea about how to let the new Buffy reboot be its own thing while keeping the name "Buffy" to help with brand recognition.

I kinda wish it was a straight spin-off where the protagonist ALSO just happens to be named Buffy. Then every so often they could just deal with the comparisons head-on ("what if I'm not as good as the original Buffy??") and spend the rest of the time being great at their own thing.

Heck, the show was around long enough that the new slayer could be named after the lady who saved her mom in HS.

That's a nice idea actually. Have her be some kind of legacy with the same name who has to grow out of the original's shadow.

That's a terrible idea. The new show needs to stand on its own two feet and giving the new slayer the same name as the previous protagonist would kill any chances of that. It would be like if back in 1987 they named Patrick Stewart's character James Tiberius Kirk.

Wow, "fan backlash". Anyway, I have no problem with a whole new Slayer. If it's a continuation, they can do some type of hand wave to get rid of all of the new Slayers. Or perhaps keep them but focus the show on just one. Works for me.

That's how I feel. How do you get backlash so quick. If they do keep it in the new universe I wonder about other things. I guess LA is destroyed in the universe isn't it? I thought it was overrun by demons in the series final of "Angel" and they went with that in the comics. Also if the show is going to be around a Hellmouth I guess Cleveland might be the setting for the show.
