Buffy TVS Reboot Confirmed

It went for 7 years. It had a good run, it doesn't need a damn reboot. There was nothing it couldn't do at the time that it needed to do, it was great and then ended. There are shows and movies that I think could use a reboot, Buffy is just about the last thing that needs it, and it will never be as good as the original show.
 
I would prefer a sequel show set in the same universe just after the events of Buffy/Angel with a whole new cast and characters rather than a reboot over the original universe.

I think having it be about a black girl, written by a black woman could bring an interesting new perspective to it.

Or just make a new show at that point? To be clear, I don't care what race a new Buffy would be, I just think its ridiculous to reboot the show, period. I hate when properties are used as window dressing for someone's original show that they can't sell, so they slap a known property on it (like the 70s Incredible Hulk), and that's what you suggest sounds like. Buffy's story is done. There are other properties to do cash grabs for, why not pick one that didn't have a long successful run? That idea wouldn't improve the concept of Buffy, and it wouldn't justify stealing the name. Make a new show if that's what they want.

I don't usually get that bothered by these random reboots, with a few exceptions, but this has crossed the line for me. I won't even bother to hate watch this crap if it gets made.

To be fair, it isn't someone else's idea. According to the article, Whedon is producing and handpicked former Agents of SHIELD writer Monica Owusu-Breen to be the showrunner. This reboot is very much in-house over at Mutant Enemy.

EDIT: Also, 144 episodes of television and 113 issues of comics is a healthy run. It's not like OG Buffy was cut down prematurely.

Oh, and everyone has to read Christos Gage's 25 issue run on Angel & Faith. It's right up there with Buffy: Seasons 2-3 & 5 and Angel: Seasons 2-5. Gage's Buffy run has its moments of greatness but feels... fanfictiony in a way his Angel & Faith run didn't. That shit felt genuine and transcendent. Calling it the best tie-in fiction I've ever read is like calling Big Finish Doctor Who a quaint little fan operation.

You just need to pick up Brian K. Vaughan's Faith & Giles graphic novel Buffy: No Future for You first for a little backstory (and a solid read), and you're golden.

A sequel would be more interesting than a remake, given how the show ended. That's assuming the comic series would no longer be canon, though.

I don't mind reboots as long when they can bring an something new and interesting to the franchise.
I've enjoyed to many reboots to be mad about them now.
The problem with doing with something like this as a new show is that if your show is similar to the original show, then people are going to get mad and accuse you of ripping it off, at least by making it a reboot you have an excuse for being similar to the original.
But with this one, I'm pretty sure when they first announced that this was in the works, they hadn't picked a showrunner yet. So whatever ideas Owusu-Breen has for the show were mostly likely thought up specifically as a way to reboot Buffy.

Fun with math. Counting Kristy Swanson, apparently we're averaging a new Buffy every nine years. :)

Seriously, the way I see it, reboots are a no-lose proposition.

If the new version disappoints, you still have the previous version.
If the new version works, then you have two good versions.

The more the merrier . . ..
 
I'm trying to picture this with a black lead because the old show was pretty darn white. I mean the title alone is part of the joke: a valley girl is a vampire slayer? wot?
 
Given that for the longest time Buffy and Angel were by freaking far the best live-action superhero TV series ever made, I'm all for there now being different versions and takes on the characters. It happens all the time with DC and Marvel superheroes. Why not Mutant Enemy superheroes too?

I liked Buffy so much that I would watch a sequel, reboot, sideboot, reverseboot. Don't care, as long as Whedon is involved. I remember Owusu-Breen from Agents of Shield. Don't recall any of her episodes standing out, but haven't looked at a list recently. Glad to see her get this gig. They want to keep the name "Buffy" in order to take advantage of the name recognition from the original show, so not much chance of w whole new show about a new slayer.

Wonder if they'll bring back all of the main characters. If so, hope Xander will be written better.

Well, with Whedon's supervision and people who've worked with him guiding it, this could be interesting.

Hope SMG's not waiting by the phone.
