Buffy ep by ep; rewatch and reviews

FOOL FOR LOVE
The Good;
All the flashbacks are great. It's also nice to see Riley who's been so put upon lately in full John Wayne mode, reminding everyone he can be pretty hardcore when he wants to be. Also love Dawn's pride at having participated in some Scooby-related coverup, it's clear that despite their sibling rivalry she actually adores her sister and wants her to be proud of her .
The Bad;
Not much this is pretty damn stunning
Best line;
Buffy/Cecilly "You're beneath me" (Stick it in and break it off why don't you?)
Women good/men bad;
In this case we see Cecily/Buffy destroy William/Spike with just a few words.
Jeez!;
The deaths of both Slayers is awful. Buffy stabbed is pretty vicious too
Kinky dinky;
Darla get's turned on by the thought of Spike and Angelus fighting. Buffy refers to her 'sexcapades with Riley' and once again Dawn seems to revel in the opportunity to burst in upon them at an intimate moment. Spike describes Buffy's wound as 'something nasty got a taste' which seems to be his plan. Dru sucking on Spike's bloody finger.
Captain Subtext;
Spike calls Angelus a 'poofter' Also love Dawn's pride at having participated in some Scooby-related coverup, she obviously longs to be in the gang. Buffy learns of a past Slayer who forged her own weapons and says that you "Gotta love a girl with her own anvil" Buffy tells Giles she loves him, obvious for a long time but possibly the first time she's said the words. Spike and Buffy at the Bronze could almost be construed as a date.
Guantanamo Bay;
Buffy beats/bribes Spike for info
Scoobies to the ER;
Buffy get's stabbed with her own stake. Thankfully Riley both saves her at the scene and patches her up afterwards.
Missing scenes;
Apocalypses; 5,
Wheldon Cliches (with kind permission from Boo)

Xander: 2; Faith, Anya
Willow: 2;Oz and Tara
Riley; 2 Buffy and Sandy
Questions and observations;
In 'School Hard' Spike claims the last Slayer he killed begged for her life. Here we find she didn't although maybe he changes his story as he's trying to get with Buffy. Later we'll find she did beg but maybe not out loud? Spike's reasoning on why Buffy has survived so long seems very sound though, he's also correct that Buffy can't win forever, eventually she and Faith are going to lose if it's just the 2 of them.
The scene where the Fang 4 are strolling through the Boxer rebellion is interesting, if you watch Buffy first it's as it appears to be. If you watch the Angel ep Darla you realise that 'Angelus' is actually a resouled Angel and has just been saving missionaries. Buffy says she's in the best shape of his life. Dawn is still shorter than her although that will change by season 7. Love the way Dawn takes such pride in covering up for Buffy, she really idolises her sister. Xander forgets the military signal Riley gives, his commando knowledge must have totally faded.
Willam the Bloody is just great. He's sired in 1880 which means he's NOT Jack the Ripper as some have suggested who terrorised London in 1888. Note that WTB has glasses but Spike doesn't need them. Now as a vamp his scar should heal so presumably the Chinise Slayer's weapon is enchanted.
This ep has one of the weirdest scenes ever where Buffy actually apologises to Giles that she's going to die young, implying that she's accepted her death and he hasn't?
Marks out of 10; 9/10 a stunning ep and to the delight of Spikettes everywhere.

Which one?
Which one?

SHADOW
The Good;
Glory's minions are hysterical. The giant snake is a lot better than what we see in Graduation Day 2 and Band Candy. All the Buffy/Dawn/Joyce scenes are fantastic beyond belief.
The Bad;
Not much although you continue to feel for Riley.
Best line;
Willow; "Tomb-go-boom!"
Women good/men bad;
Riley cheats on Buffy.
Jeez!;
Not an ep for you if you suffer from Ophidiophobia
Kinky dinky;
Riley get's some vamp action/snuff. Spike takes his stalking of Buffy to a new level, sniffing her sweater and stealing a pair of Buffy's skimpy pink frilly undies as Riley kicks him out. Dawn tells Riley Buffy cries a lot less with him about, she means well but this isn't what he wants to hear. Giles appears quite taken with Glory, can't blame him with her in that red leather dress. Xander also gives her the once-over
Captain Subtext;
Check out the little look Willow gives Xander when he eyes up Glory, there's still something there. When Xander and Riley have their heart to heart Xander asks Riley "What kind of action are you looking for?" Ohhh matron! Dawn is quite the screamer (she could have been a Classic Dr Who companion) and one could say that this is Buffy protecting her virginal teenage sister from the threat of a huge phallic snake? Sitting astride it and restraining it with a chain.
Guantanamo Bay;
Scoobies to the ER;
Buffy needs an ice pack after Glory smacks her around.

Questions and observations;
Aleister Crowley was a famous British occultist/satanist who coined the phrase 'Do what thou wilt shall be the only law'. Xander refers to Riley as Captain America who was also a goverment supersoldier. Joyce has a cellphone, about time one of the Sunnydale Scoobies did. The Sunnydale Zoo again. Another lovely Xander/Riley scene. Note when Riley goes to see Buffy after being with Sandy he wears a high necked sweater to cover the bite marks.

REAL ME.
Other than certain format-breakers such as Restless, this is my favourite episode of Buffy. The partial reboot is a bit cheeky, perhaps, but it pays off very nicely with a "day one" vibe throughout much of the episode.

Best lines:
You can hardly move for great dialogue in this episode.
Favourite bits include these (Thanks to TwizTV):

BUFFY: Giles, are you breaking up with your car?
GILES: Well, it did seduce me, all red and sporty!
BUFFY: Little two-door tramp.

ANYA: Ooh! I'm so pleased. (Scoops up the plastic markers that represent children) Can I trade in the children for more cash?

HARMONY: I've been doing my homework, reading books and stuff.
SPIKE: What, Evil for Dummies?

BUFFY: Well, aside from the fact that most magic shop owners in Sunnydale have the life expectancy of a Spinal Tap drummer ... and, have you ever run a store before?
GILES: I was a librarian for years. This is exactly the same, except people pay for the things they don't return.

And of course...
XANDER: People slip, Buffy. Your mom did. She invited in the mas- (Catches himself) Dracula. In for coffee.

Great lines, great delivery. Even Riley gets in several gems. The visual humour is excellent, too, with the breakfast-table shenanigans and Dawn's dressing to impress Xander. I think that it conveys a sense of enthusiasm and freshness about the show's new direction.

Nine out of ten; almost too good to be true.

Absolutely, we'll prove to people how wonderful Dawn is yet!:)

Listening to Fear
The Good;
Some great acting from SMG and KS with Joyce's madness. Lovely Buffy/Joyce/Dawn scenes, especially when they're in bed together. In many ways though this is Riley's ep, see him take charge of the military team, he's back in his place.
The Bad;
Not a great deal
Best line;
Joyce "My dear sweet brave Buffy, what would I do without you?" (always brings a tear to my eye)
Women good/men bad;
Jeez!;
The Queller is HORRIBLE! Ben demonstrates his ruthless side.Poor Dawn spends the entire episode quaking in fear at either the Queller demon or mad people (including her mother) shouting at her. Buffy breaks into tears and I don't blame her. The scene where Joyce, always the tower of strength in Buffy begs for her daughters to take her home like a frightened child is heartbreaking.
Kinky dinky;
None this ep, too much happening
Captain Subtext;
Joyce works out that Dawn isn't her natural daughter but doesn't care because she still belongs to her and Buffy, she's precious and they love her. She makes Buffy promise to take care of her. When Joyce asks what she'd ever do without Buffy you can see Buffy wondering what she'd ever do without her mum?When Anya suggests that the radiation from the meteorite might cause sterility Riley and Xander look alarmed but Giles doesn't, given up on the idea of having his own children?

What the fanficcers thought;
Buffy has sex with the Quellar demon. No, I'm NOT kidding either! http://www.t-s-s-a.com/stories/show-story.php?story=Buffy-Quelled.txt (if over 18 and VERY open minded)
Questions and observations;
Our first hints that Ben is not all he appears. Will finds the dead body again. Graham again, yay! He should fix his beret though. Dawn saves Joyce through her quick thinking, she's a Summer's girl alright. Joyce's insane remark about about Buffy being 'disgustingly fat' is all the more ironic given how painfully thin SMG looks this season. The vamps Willow stakes look like they're female wrestlers or something? (love Willow's pride followed by fainting)Really this ep hits Buffy where she hurts, she can face all the dangers of being a slayer as long as she has her friends and Joyce and Dawn to come home to. When her home life is threatened that really unnerves her

I love season 5. In terms of action, suspense, story, character development, etc, it delivers on all fronts. It may be my favourite season of one of my most beloved shows, next to season 3, of course, which is equally stunning.

Especially the second half of s5. The final stretch from 'Spiral' through to 'The Gift' never lets up. It's a thrill ride (forgive the cliche). The show really did experience a rebirth this year, and you're not alone, Saturn5, I thought Dawn was a great addition to the mythos. She played a crucial role in the story, and those who say she was annoying, she was supposed to be! It helps that Michelle Trachtenberg became pretty damned smoking hot as an adult. Although that does make watching her as a 14 year old again feel a little bit awkward.

Yeah it's reassuring when we get to season 7 and Dawn becomes
a) legal
b) more beautiful with each passing ep

INTO THE WOODS
The Good; Buffy killing the 7 vamps is awesome, Xander's speech to Anya at the end is wonderful. Love Buffy's run to the chopper but do we really want her to make it?
The Bad;
Who's right and wrong in the Riley/Buffy argument? Riley cheats on Buffy but through no fault of her own she's been driving him away for a long time. In the end Riley's departure has a sense of relief about it.
Best line;
Anya (in a perfect impression of Willow) "I dislike that Anya. She's newly human and strangely literal"
Women good/men bad;
Who wins the gender war here?
Jeez!;
Kinky dinky;
Dawn refers to Buffy and Riley 'boinking'. Apparently Giles used to frequent vamp brothels in his Ripper days (hence the Draccy babes?). Xander and Anya have apparently used the vaulting horse in Buffy's training room for sexual adventures. Buffy suggests giving Joyce a wig that would make her look like a French Maid? Sure Xander would like that! Spike asks Buffy if she's naked under the sheet. Anya bathes Xander in a 'Penthousey' sort of way.
Captain Subtext;
Psychologists say that new mothers tend to lose interest in sex partly because of the exhaustion and trauma of giving birth but also because they get much of the physical and emotional affection they crave from their babies. When you look at Buffy at the hospital with Dawn in her lap and Riley sitting to one side you wonder if something similar was an aggravating factor in their breakup, that Buffy didn't need Riley so much anymore because she had Dawn? The army captain says to Riley that his organisation 'always need bodies'. Riley catches on to Spike's obsession a long time before anyone else.
Xander and Giles seem reluctant to hug at the hospital. Even now Spike realises that he doesn't have a shot with Buffy, foreshadowing Angel season 5.

Questions and observations;
If we're to believe Dawn's chopstick story then she always knew about Buffy being the Slayer which is confirmed in the comics. Spuffers must have been choking on their cornflakes at the fake staking Spike scene.
So Buffy and Riley? Could it ever have worked? Well, maybe post-Chosen but not then I think, Riley makes the right decision.

Nine out of ten; almost too good to be true.

I am a fan of this episode as well. It's a nice little rejuvenation for the series, and shows us that season 5 will not be more of the same, but a new era of the show. I don't get the hate for Dawn. She makes a fine addition to the cast. She's cute as a button as a kid, and becomes quite a beautiful young woman as an adult in season 7.

One thing I love about Buffy (well, there are many, many things I love about this series) is that there is no status quo, not reset button. The show is constantly growing and changing into new forms, as are the characters. And we're there with them throughout the journey.

Xander was all kinds of awesome with his beautiful little speeches to his women. A shining moment for the character. Hence my astonishment at and hatred for Hell's Bells.

TRIANGLE
The Good;
All of it, a lightweight ep but a really good one, I think we've all had enough Buffy/Riley doomed romance and ill Joyce for a while. Time for some fun plus some lovely Buffy/Dawn bed scenes and a great redefinement of the Anya/Xander/Willow relationship.
The Bad;
Anya says she's never driven before but she refers to her car in Graduation Day pt2.
Best line;
Troll; "Do you know where there are babies?"
Spike (to Xander) "Where do you think, the hosptial?"
Xander (shocked) "What? SHUT UP!" (that humanity still a work in progress, huh Spike? As is proved by him expecting credit for not feeding off the victims at the Bronze)
Women good/men bad;
Actually Anya seems to disparage women who constantly pick the wrong man meaning she has to inflict vengence on them again and again. Anya made her boyfriend a troll to punish him for cheating on her.
Jeez!;
Eating babies?
Kinky dinky;
Buffy meets a nun who let's her try on her wimple which is a level of kink that even scares Xander (although from all we've learned it might be just Angel's thing?). Spikes rant at the mannequin is hysterically funny, pathetic and scary all at the same time. Anya intends to get around the health inspector by flirting with him. The Troll plans to make 'Merry sport' with Sunnydales more attractive daughters and 'making merry with the local virgins'. Spike seems to delight in copping a feel of Buffy when the troll knocks them both to the ground at the Bronze (his little smile as they get to their feet says it all). Anya reminds Willow that it was her lips that broke up Xander and Cordelia.
Captain Subtext;
Tara likes Greek studies, the Amazons?Sappho? Buffy and Tara snuggle, Buffy's distress at their fight obviously grounded in her and Riley. She asks the nun what the whole 'abjuring the company of men' is like, implying she's considering it. Will defensively states she would never have sex with Xander because 'Hello, gay now!' Lovely scene where Xander walks into the Magic Shop and sees Willow and Anya "Hey my two favourite girls"(notices Tara) "Three favourite girls". Love the little smile Tara gives when he says that. Xander says that Willow gives him a 'What do you see in her?' look concerning Anya, surely as a lesbian she should appreciate exactly what Xander sees in the beautiful Anya? Anya comments that Willow doesn't want anyone else to have Xander. Again with Riley gone Buffy seems to be drawing closer and closer to Dawn as an emotional/physical substitute.

What the fanficcers thought;
Buffy and the nun(s) a pretty popular slashfic pairing (must be a Catholic thing?)
Questions and observations;
Anya makes Xander promise he will send her big signals if he ever leaves her. Well, jilting her at the altar was a pretty big sign. Nice visual gag, Xander wonder's how Buffy is dealing with her breakup and the action cuts to a pretty young nun standing in the convent courtyard, for a moment we wonder if Buffy's taken her vows (Buffy the Vampire Slaying Nun would probably please some of the shows more puritan critics. Or maybe the kinkier ones depending on how you look at it?). Anya's top makes her look like a whale shark. Willow refers to Dr Seus and is ironically wearing a red/white striped top just like the character in the book. Buffy looks like she needs an after school burger. With Giles out of town and Riley and Oz gone Xander ends up confiding in Spike as the only other male around which foretells seasons 6 and 7. The origin of the phrase 'Insane troll logic'. Again a bit morally dubious letting the troll go. Joyce, Giles and Buffy are all in on the Dawn secret, Joyce refers to her as 'My little girl'.

I love those silly little running jokes that pop up from time to time, like Insane Troll Logic, the World Without Shrimp (and it's corollary, the World With Nothing But Shrimp), and the fact that despite all the various monsters and beasties in the world, leprechauns are a myth.

^Yeah, for the most part, Buffy/Angel have pretty great continuity, and nice little in jokes and 'thankyous' to the long-term fans. I hadn't noticed that 'Anya has never driven before' gaffe. That's another reason I love these shows. They try to stay true to their fans, the universe, and the characters. The continuity, and arcs, are amazing. Even though each season of Buffy has its own self contained story and Big Bads, it all basically blends into one 7 year long story arc.

Also, the show rarely recasts actors, either, which makes for good visual continuity. A pet hate of mine is when shows will swap actors and pretend its the same character (except for Dr Who of course, which has a legit excuse!). Apart from Xander's dad changing actors, and Nikki Wood changing actors, I can't think of that many more examples.

Considering how they appear on Charmed we should be grateful! Yeah Buffy's got great continuity and keeps recasts down to a minimum but no show is perfect so let's try to point out the stuff we notice as we go. The only other one that occurs to me is that they recast the first slayer but under all the makeup you can hardly tell. They also carry out Xena/Hercules trick of having the same actors play different characters on the show.

CHECKPOINT
The Good;
Some very good scenes with the council and a nice face off between Buffy and Glory at the Summer's house. Buffy's speech to the council is spot on. Love Tara's little look of panic as she invents a magical proficency level for her and Willow.
The Bad;
Surely Buffy's point that the Watcher's depend on her rather than vice versa is self evident all along?
Best line;
Travers; "Glory's not a demon"
Buffy; "What is she?"
Travers; "She's a god"
Oh boy!
Women good/men bad;
Buffy tells the Council that she has the power, changing a relationship between Watcher and Slayer that has endured millenia.
Jeez!;
Glory brainsucks the postman. Even more horrible is the way she refers to him as 'that' afterwards.
Kinky dinky;
The female Watcher seems to have a Spikette's lust for Spike. Spike suggests Buffy's beauty is fading and that she is not has firm and high (at 20?)
Captain Subtext;
Willow and Tara finally say what they are out loud. Buffy seems to imply that Rasputin was a vamp. The lover of the one Angel killed in 'Why we fight?' Another terrific Spike/Joyce scene, they both love the Passions TV show. Buffy remarks that she 'Doesn't need a boyfriend'. Once again we see the Glory-Buffy-Dawn subtext with Glory suggesting Ben 'bang' the key's location out of Buffy. She also refers to Buffy as 'Sweetie' and thinks the picture of her and Dawn in 'So cute'. She describes Dawn as the 'Darlingest thing', 'Honey' and says she likes her as she's 'Sassy'. Glory's minion thinks Ben 'quite attractive'. Willow refer to her and Tara's relationship with Buffy as 'Just friends'.

Questions and observations;
First appearance of the Knights of Byzantium. Couldn't they put their tattoos somewhere a little less obvious? Of course the Watcher's are right about the dangers of some of the Magic Shop contents as Triangle and later eps will prove. The stars are once again pivotal to Glory's spell. So how do we kill a god? Titan's rib? Golden Hind's blood? Xena?
So who are these Byzantium guys and what do they want other than to fight Glory? (which seems pretty admirable but bad news for Dawn). I always figured that maybe the Watcher's Council had some form of schism reformation style and they're an offshoot

Santa Claus isn't, though, according to Anya in The Body.:devil:

Lo-res and hi-res albums for Fool For Love. Hard work to get decent screencaps of in places, but a fine episode. Spike the sensitive poet, who'd have thpught it?

Fool For Love is one of my favourite episodes of the whole series. It's great to see Spike's origin story, as a sensitive poet, and I can't help but feel sorry for him at the end, as he gets rejected by Cecily, Dru, and Buffy. The battles against both the past Slayers are awesome, and I love the way the ep ties into Angel Season 2's 'Darla'. I love it how we see it from Spike and Dru's perspective in this episode, and from Darla and Angel's in the latter. I'm a sucker for the mythology episodes, and the historical episodes.

Very good episode, and I think Spike never lost part of that sensitive William the Bloody-ness. He still has vestiges of that lovelorn poet, and observer of humanity, in him.
