Buddhist services

So, I was invited by a friend to attend a local Buddhist "service" (if that's even the right word!) that he goes to once a month. He's giving a presentation on joy. I'm really intrigued, especially since I know very little about eastern philosophies. The generalities that I DO know, however, make it sound like something a "spiritual atheist" like myself could get behind and appreciate.

But I was curious...for those of you who've gone/do go, what can I expect? What happens? What are some of the major tenets of Buddhism? I know how to use search engines and Wikipedia as well as anyone else, so I'm not looking for the standard textbook answers or links, by the way. I'm curious about personal experiences that you've had or have heard from friends/co-workers who attend.

I've never been to a Buddhist Service, but I've ordered a lot of Zen Hot Dogs. ;)

I have no experience with Buddhist worship, although I have enjoyed the writings of of the late nun Ayya Khema.

I wish I could help, but PLEASE report back so those of use who are curious can expand our worlds.
