Screenwriter Buck Henry passed away today at 89 of a heart attack.

Henry wrote The Graduate, co-wrote What's Up, Doc?, and co-created Get Smart with Mel Brooks. He also wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for Catch-22, The Owl and the Pussycat, The Day of the Dolphin, and To Die For. He was the director of Heaven Can Wait.

He also appeared on Saturday Night Live as the father of Todd (Bill Murray).

A true legend. His SNL, Carson and Letterman appearances were always must-see. Mainly a writer with a brilliant ear for deadpan, he had some great acting parts too, like Catch-22 and Eating Raoul.

To Die For seems somewhat forgotten these days, but it was genius and way ahead of its time on ideas of media notoriety and "stardom."

He was definitely a talented writer; The Graduate, Get Smart, Quark (the first sci-fi parody/lampoon in its handful of ahead-of-its-time episodes still managed to do more than pick at Star Wars while being its own sci-fi in its own right...) He's quite the resume...

He even hosted SNL a few times, back during the only time people thought it was funny (1976-1980, give or take a season).

Oh, Quark not only picked at Star Wars (in a shockingly timely fashion), the whole Quark (sounds like Kirk), Ficus (acts like Spock) dynamic was flagrant. Henry also gave Tim Thomerson one of his best, if not his very best, roles in Gene/Jean. The whole switch-back-and-forth-between-male-and-female-at-the-drop-of-a-hat was so well executed, you realize Thomerson is one hell of an actor the first time he does it.
