Bryan Singer: "My personality meshes more with [X-Men]"

I would view Donner's Superman right up there with Wizard of Oz and Star Wars. I remember watching it as a kid and it having that same effect on me as those films.

The difference is that most kids born in 1990 or in 2000 will end up seeing The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars.

^ This is true. Saw both of them when I was little. I only just watched Superman a year or two ago, in my twenties.

Has Singer ever gone on the record saying what he thinks of X-Men: The Last Stand?

Bryan Singer has been very political about his feelings toward X-Men: The Last Stand. He said he liked it and that he and Brett Ratner are friends. He also commented how it is hard to juggle all of those characters in an ensemble piece, which might be as close to a critical response to the film as we might get from him. However, I doubt Singer would outright condemn the film, even if he did truly dislike it (which I think he did). James Cameron was pretty political over his opinions on T3 and Salvation if I recall correctly.

I doubt that 20th Century Fox would do 2 big X-Men movies in the same year. That would be overkill. What would probably be best is to find some way to stream out a steady supply of movies at a maximum rate of 1 per year. A year is long enough to keep us wanting more yet not so long that we've forgotten about the last one. Perhaps do Wolverine 2 in 2012, X-Men 4 or X-Men: First Class in 2013, and then the Deadpool spin-off in 2014.

Apparently, 20th Century Fox wants to fast track X-Men: First Class and Wolverine 2. Right now only Wolverine 2 is slated for 2012 but word on the street is that First Class might also be released in 2012 or possibly 2013. What I don't get is that if Singer won't be available until 2012, and First Class could be scheduled until 2013, why ditch Singer? I know these movies usually take two years but then First Class would get pushed back into 2014. Just another year. What's the big fuss?

I agree with Singer completely. Don't get me wrong. I loved Superman Returns. It was a beautiful big budgeted Superman movie with modern day FX and was absolutely epic. The problem is that it was a tad too serious. Too dark. Too much of it happening in Superman's head than on the screen. It ignored the fairy tale aspect of the character and stuck with the psychological.

Superman is not a deeply psychological character. He's mythological. He's the modern day Hercules. He's bigger than life. Richard Donner understood this better than anybody and that's why his first Superman movie is an undisputed classic.

X-Men opens itself up to psychological and sociological examination in a way that Superman does not. In a way that Bryan Singer does exceedingly well. He's the perfect fit for X-Men.

Superman needs a JJ Abrams (not as the writer though). Superman needs a Brad Bird. Superman needs a Richard Donner. He needs somebody who thinks big and isn't afraid to blow up half the world for an epic fist fight.

Superman needs someone who can make LEGENDS come to life in a BIG way.

Bryan Singer's style lends itself to something more intimate.

I love Superman Returns also and I completely agree with your assessment. I do hope we get a little more less serious but still action packed intense special FX loaded Superman movie sometime soon.

I think Kevin Smith pretty much nailed Superman Returns in this review here.

I actually don't mind X-Men The Last Stand as much as most others. I do agree it is lacking the depth and the sense of flow the other films had. However, the cure story line was an itneresting moral challenge for the mutant characters, as there are good points to both sides (take the cure or get rid of it). I think I pretty much agree with this review. I also will say that if they used Pheonix like the comic books, it wouldn't have been believeable, and I think she did a good amount of chaos and destruction at the end of the film. I just find it odd that suddenly Wolverine can heal faster than ever to get to her.
Yeah, it's an off movie. It doesn't quite work, but there is enough substance in there in my opinion to make it a good film.

I really liked the moral dilemma that the cure option gave the mutants and for that part of the story line it really made X-Men: Last Stand a very good movie and I was surprised to see how many people disliked it. I think it was a darker film than the other two so maybe that might have been the reason.

Cameron never openly criticized T3 or Terminator Salvation. However, that may not be because he was being political. IIRC, he didn't hesitate to criticize Alien 3.

As for my personal opinions on X-Men: The Last Stand, I'm not sure the entire movie holds up well but it has its moments. I think Singer is really good at the small stuff, like the Wolverine/Rogue scenes in the 1st movie. Ratner is better at the big stuff. Scenes like the Phoenix killing Professor Xavier or Wolverine killing Phoenix had exactly the epic resonance they needed. It's not as good as the 2 movies that Singer directed but it is the best Brett Ratner movie I've ever seen.

Meanwhile, Wolverine was merely inoffensive. It had a few mildly interesting set pieces but didn't tell us anything important that we didn't already know from X2. Still, I'm greatly looking forward to Wolverine 2 doing the Japan storyline.

Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood reports that it's a done deal that Singer is no longer directing X-Men: First Class. He'll just be producing. According to Fleming, Fox wants to fast-track this to start production this year for release next year. Their reason for wanting to fast-track it so much is that they evidently flipped over the script Jamie Moss delivered working from Singer's treatment and they want the film as soon as possible.

Yeah, I was partly kidding. I'm sure no matter how much Rothman is a dick, the quest to make money is his first priority.

Although fucking Singer and anything X-Men related seems to be his second. ;)

Maybe they can reveal that James Marsden was hiding behind a rock in X3. "Guys, I'm okay! She just knocked my visor off!"

Well if they ever want to use Cable, Scott and Jean's DNA have to be up for grabs. That's why I think featuring them as prisoners of Mister Sinister is workable. Phoenix ws a psychic projection in the comics but if they wanted to avoid confusingthe dummies, modifying the Madelyne Prior storyline with a clone would be ok.

Did I read somewhere that Singer & Rothman patched things up a year or two ago? Not that this would stop Rothman being completely clueless about X-Men movies, obviously.

I read this article as well...it allows Singer to continue directing "Jack the Giant Killer" for Warner Bros and still produce "X-Men The First Class" for Fox without any legal difficulties cropping up. I assume that once he completes his contractual obligations for "Jack the Giant Killer" that he will come on board for "X-Men 4". Although he still has deals signed of course for remakes of "Excalibur" and "Battlestar Galactica" so I don't know what they plan to do with those.

^ I believe that Guy Ritchie is supposedly doing an Arthurian movie for the same company for which Singer was to make Excalibur. If that project goes ahead, it's difficult to see Excalibur being made. So that's one down.

Guy Ritchie is making an Arthurian movie...THIS intrigues me. I thought though Guy was fast tracking Sherlock Holmes 2? I wonder then if we'll ever see Warren Ellis's script?

^^^
Sherlock Holmes 2 is being fast-tracked as Guy Ritchie's next film. A new take on the Arthurian legend is a project he's developing for down the line.

Arthurian projects are all the rage lately. Starz has just given the greenlight to Camelot, with an initial order of 10 episodes, from the producers of The Tudors.

I read about "Camelot" and I'll be catching that. Watched a couple of episodes of the "Merlin" series and didn't like it at all.

I liked the Last Stand, even though the 2nd film is the best of the trilogy:cool:.
My biggest problem with the Last Stand was the movies lenght. I felt that the film was too short and could have used about 20+ minutes more running time, considering the subject matter. It felt rushed at some points:shifty:
