Bryan Fuller is Showrunner on New Trek Series

This is excellent news. My anticipation for this new series just jumped 10X.

Q2

Fuller is just who I was hoping would run the show. I'm relieved, because I thought it was announced a few months ago that he'd be the showrunner for some other series. But this is terrific news. Not only does Fuller have a wealth of Trek knowledge and experience, but he's a wildly inventive and daring creator. He could potentially reinvent Star Trek in very interesting ways while still being true to its spirit.

And I think the odds of the Trek franchise finally including LGBT characters onscreen have just gone up considerably.

Selfishly, I'm hoping Fuller will set his series in a new version of the universe or in the Abramsverse, so that my Trek novels won't have to be contradicted. Although even aside from that, I'd be intrigued to see how Fuller would reinvent the Trek universe from scratch.

Hopefully he can bring the amazing story telling from Hannibal to Star Trek. This is a major success in the trek world. I'm pumped! Now we need an incredible actor/actress to occupy the role of captain.

It looks like he has been thinking about it for a while now too so he should be able to hit the ground running. This announcement has me genuinely excited!

From Memory Alpha:

On 2 March 2009 Fuller told iF Magazine that he is pushing for a new Star Trek TV series based on "old style" Star Trek. In the interview he stated that "I told my agent and told the people of J.J. Abrams' team I want to create another Star Trek series and have an idea that I'm kicking around. I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude. I loved Voyager and Deep Space Nine, but they seem to have lost the '60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin."

This is all VERY exciting.

I guess I have to watch Hannibal now... :D

He's been doing good, steady work in modern television since TV Trek up and died ten years ago. This is encouraging, as is his preference for TOS-era Trek.

Awesome news, I can't think of a better choice.

Time to dig up those Wonderfalls DVDs :)
