Bryan Fuller: Diversity is key

Fuller was instrumental in casting before he left:

“We were very adamant early on about that cast, not just in terms of race but also in terms of gender,” Fuller explained. “Janeway (of “Star Trek: Voyager”) carved a nice path as did Majel Barrett (Nurse Christine Chapel in the original “Star Trek” series) in 1966, in the original pilot. So it was important for ethnic inclusivity and gender inclusivity (to be upheld in casting). I was very excited to cast Michelle Yeoh before I left. I was pushing very hard for Sonequa Martin-Green to be cast before I left. So I feel like there’s a lot of wonderful diversity represented in the show, and I’m excited to see how it turns out.”

I'm not in the least bit satisfied.

No trans-gendered or gender-fluid cast member?
No physically challenged cast member?
No vietnam-era veteran cast member?
No cast members belonging to a radical terrorist organization?
No obese cast members?
No meth-addicted cast members?
No cast members who were previously sex workers?
No cast members who voted for Trump?

Until Star Trek finally puts its money where its mouth is with regard to fair and equal representation of all members of humanity, it's nothing but a typical Hollywood racist-fest wrapped up in weak, disguised handwaving while claiming to be progressive and modern. I'll boycott. Because canon, too...and CBS All Access making us pay.

Rage.

Pretty much all Discovery has to show for itself is casting announcements and the cast tweeting pics of themselves going to lunch. Color me bored.

I hear that. We aren't *too* far off from the fall, and not much is out there. I really wish we would get some substantive news. Probably too soon for a teaser trailer until they get half of the episodes filmed I suppose...

Satire is not for you; stay in your wheelhouse.

Oh...on that note, avoid sarcasm as well.

I actually want a trans crew member. There's almost no positive trans representation in fiction in any form of media. Some people will probably think of this as a joke, but reminding an incredibly persecuted and oppressed minority that they have a place in the future would be extremely empowering.

I agree. A transgender crew member would be all kinds of awesome. A chance for Star Trek to actually be relevant (again?).

Then again, people aren't even able to accept the TNG skant uniforms.

Hey, the line has to be drawn somewhere.
Nope. Need diversity.
It would halo and inspire thousands, many who need it now desperately.
Indeed. I may not agree with every point, but I do support representation and characters who can explore different points of view and experiences.
Then again, people aren't even able to accept the TNG skant uniforms.
Because they were ugly.

The real question is, will we get a Doctor who is a creep?

[Do I get cross thread bonus points?]

If we don't, the show will be terrible. A show without creeps is not diverse enough. Creeps are members of society too...and they need to be portrayed in a positive light so that creeps everywhere can be inspired and recognize that they are not alone in their creepishness.

I will not pay $7 per month for a show without creep doctors featured heavily.

I won't go further because it would imply getting into an endless and ultimately pointless debate (nor do I want to make unfair comparisons), and I do get the sense of humor in some mentions, but under that pretext, should not there also be misogynist machists, neo-Nazis, animal hunters, and mass murderers?

I recognise the sarcasm/humour here, but you do realise you just pretty much covered the extended cast of Ds9 right? Characters not cast mind you... but no Trump equivalent. No one voted for Winn.

Pretty sure Mudd is confirmed and the Klingons and Romulans will most likely be present, along with (hopefully) a species either unique to Discovery or one that hasn't been explored much in other series. But the Nazi Planet is supposedly a few years away from DSC's starting date, and animal hunting is perfectly ethical especially when done to keep populations from going out of control in the absence of natural predators (or when dealing with species that are clearly nothing more than ecological pests, such as boar in the United States), so 2 out of 4. Not bad.

Anyway, I personally just hope that Discovery puts in the effort to do diversity properly instead of hamfistedly. Not that Trek usually has a problem with that, but then again Trek has always been on a primary channel.

Then again, people aren't even able to accept the TNG skant uniforms.
Because they never happened. Anyone who thinks otherwise has clearly been brainwashed by the Cardassians. I bet you think there were five lights, too.
