Broadcast episode not sounding good

I don't actually watch alot of Star Trek on TV these days but yesterday I decided to tune in to 4 back to back episodes showing on UK's Virgin 1 and noticed that audio tracks started to sound a little warped, like when a cassette tape would get tight or twisted. I do know about the case when it comes to converting NTSC to PAL but is this still the case even in todays broadcasts where there still using the old tapes instead of going digital, which I realise can't be done everything?

That's odd. I don't see how a digital copy would make distortion like that, which leads me to think that they are broadcasting off a VHS deck - which is lame - :vulcan:

In other cases of audio weirdness, the station would be broadcasting the surround sound track which sounds wonky on 2.0 speakers. But I don't think it would make tape-distortion effects -
