Bring Back Kathryn Janeway to the Voyager books! Online Petition!

I typically avoid posting in these threads, but I actually think that Syn.Sixx does make a good point that everyone else seems to have ignored. He basically says that he wants to be able to read a new book with Janeway in it. There are no such books; there may be books that talk about Janeway, but that's about it.

Since so many people seem to want to draw the comparison, contrast that with Kirk. In many ways, Kirk really isn't dead. Yes, he's dead post-2371 in the main continuity. He's alive post-2371 in the Shatnerverse - an alternate reality, which is something Syn.Sixx has said he would favor as long as he got to see Janeway in a book again. But more importantly, Kirk still appears in the novels, alive and well. Sure, these novels are set during the five-year mission, or before it, or during the movie era, but if someone wants to head to the store and pick up a book with Kirk in it, it's usually not too hard to find something. Simply put, that can't be done with Janeway.

Now of course there are marketing reasons for why we still see Kirk in books. This also doesn't really apply as much with the 24th century characters; these seem to be focused on moving continually forward, so we don't get as many chances to revisit old friends, though there are still the occasionally Lost Era type stories and the like. (As an aside, Janeway does make an appearance in The Buried Age during her younger days...)

Anyway, just thought that was a point worth following up on. We all seem to use whatever the farthest year we've seen in modern continuity to define someone as dead, but not all books are based in the same period. After all, how can Kirk be dead? We're going to be reading about him in Rings of Time in a couple months. ;)

Honestly, I think I've discovered the real prejudice in TrekLit. The higher ups hate Suzie Plakson. Selar's dead. K'Ehleyr and Tarah are still dead. Q, while alive, is last seen hanging out with Janeway (WHO IS DEAD!). Obviously there's some sort of institutional hatred of characters portrayed by Ms. Plakson.

I'm starting a bring back K'Ehleyr, Selar, Tarah, and/or Q petition as soon as I get the time!

That's a really good point, 21Spike65. I may be overstating my case, but I think Chakotay has received more character development and in-depth attention in Beyer's relaunch novels than he did in most, if not all, of the TV series. As someone who really didn't care for Janeway's character on the show, I would love to see a writer of Beyer's caliber work similarly on her.

(Disclaimer: I have not yet read Jeri Taylor's Mosaic or Pathways, so I don't know if those books made Janeway more interesting...)

According to Memory Beta, Janeway's two assignments before being assigned to Voyager were as captain of the Bonestell and first officer of the Billings. Have any stories covered her career on those vessels with any detail?

Unfortunately, it still won't satisfy the TrekBBS, ummm... "Janeway fans", several of whom said they couldn't even read a brand new novel about Janeway, even set during the TV series' seven years, because their enjoyment of the narrative would be coloured by the fact they knew she was slated to die in such a horrid way.

"Mosaic" is essential reading for all ST fans who like Janeway, as is "Captain's Table: Fire Ship".

"Pathways" attempts to do the same for the rest of the main crew, as "Mosaic" did for Janeway, but Jeri Taylor was suddenly asked to include Seven of Nine in the bookend tale, meaning that poor ol' Neelix has to channel the spirit of the now-departed Kes in order for us to hear her backstory.

Also, most of the backstories in Pathways ended up being contradicted by later seasons of the show, since Taylor was no longer running the show by that point and the new showrunners didn't consider her novels binding. I think the only one that didn't get contradicted was Kes's backstory, since she was gone from the show by then.

Yes, I realize that simply having a book focusing on Janeway won't satisfy many people who want her back. I was responding only to Syn.Sixx's comments a bit upthread, which sound far more agreeable to such things. After all, she (my apologies Syn.Sixx for referring to you as 'he' before; I didn't think to check your profile for a gender) says she wouldn't even mind if such books are part of the main continuity or not.

Personally, I've always thought it would be cool to read some stories set in the original, pre-Endgame timeline where it takes Voyager a lot longer to get home.

And really, aren't there more important causes to focus our attention on?

This from the guy who has time to post almost every thread on this board at just about any time of day... seriously?!

Although that is slightly blown out of proportion, it's only about half of all the threads, I do fully agree with this statement.

Pot, Kettle and Black came to mind when I read what Chris wrote concerning that statement.

I think an individual posting on the TrekBBS (which you could argue is part of his job, you know, connecting with his readers, keeping current with the community in which he is a prominent and respected figure) is a little different than organizing hundreds of people to sign a petition about a tie-in novel series. Christopher's point, I believe, was that if you're gonna put that effort towards a petition about that, why not put it instead towards sending a petition to President Obama about climate change?

I freely admit I'm too much of a Web potato for my own good and do not endorse my current lifestyle as one worth emulating. What I'm saying is that if someone, unlike me, has the energy and passion to organize a petition and try to get a movement going, there are more useful ways to direct that energy and passion. Directing it into a petition to bring Janeway back in the books is going to make exactly zero difference. And it's a shame to see all that activist energy going to waste on such a futile effort when there are more constructive and important things that could be done with it.

The OP may work for 40 hours a week with Habitat for Humanity and volunteer at a shelter after that for all any of us know. How much effort does a facebook petition and a few posts on this board really take? It is a shame to see someone telling someone with an activist mentality that they are wasting their time.

I'm on it.

I bet we hit a thousand signatures before the other one does.

edit: So I'm just going to leave this right here...

If you think my intent was to dismiss the value of activism in general, you could not have missed my point more completely. I've explained my position already.

Wow..saw this here as well as the other and I'm just astonished by how nasty some people are treating others for no reason that not agreeing with a simple opinion. Some of you are particularly unpleasant and why? Because one group of fans doesn't share your views? All someone did here was share some information..

Wow.. another thread to stay far away from and several people here to block because if this is how you treat people.. I don't want to know you.

I don't have a problem with the people who are making the posts, it's the topic of their posts. Like I said before, for me at least, it's the fact that this comes up constantly and it always turns into the exact same argument, there is never any progress being made, and there never will make any progress. It's just getting really, really, really old and really, really, really the repetitive. It's also rather pointless.

Is there any way to sign the keep Janeway dead petition with giving my real name and address?

He's also the guy who has the necessary inside information to determine that this cause will be fruitless, so the point stands despite any apparent hypocrisy.
