Bridge Commander Vs. Legacy

Neoshade

Just looking for some opinions.

I currently have ST: Legacy with the Ultimate Universe 2.0 mod. i am quite pleased with the mod. though.... controls are still rubbish.

I am looking at BC as an Alt. but its only DX8b.... i know there are mods. but do any mods make the game up to par with at least Legacy graphics wise?

Also, dose anyone get stutter or freezeups during large ship battles? my computer is a beast, i dont see why it couldn't handle 128 ships on a map. my UU 2.0 tools freeze too. anyone know why? thanks! :bolian:

Legacy is a piece of crap compared to a modded BC install. BC's controls are more intuitive and the graphics can be upgraded through the mods into something truly stunning! As well as the incredible amount of functionality!

Get BC, download Kobayashi Maru, and DS9FX as a minimum! Then enjoy!

BC is also the only game I ever release a (admittedly crappy and unfinished) mod for:

I've only ever played Legacy on Xbox 360, so I have no mod experience to offer. Legacy has always had the edge graphics wise for me. I've never really gotten any mods for Bridge Commander, so I tend to play Legacy more often, some of the systems are beautiful. I very much enjoy playing movie era TOS in the skirmish mode.

The advantage of Bridge Commander for me is, being able to decide exactly which ships you're gonna go up against in "Tactical Simulation Mode."

Well I only ever got Supermod to work once, and to be honest it was fairly epic when it did, it was mainly graphics and ships rather than functionality if I remember correctly but it really was a wonderful addition!

Kobayashi Maru is the most far reaching mod IIRC. It adds a whole host of new ships and functions, collecting the best mods and adding some others: http://bckobayashimaru.de/ws/index.php?

DS9 FX adds a new campaign to the game based on the DS9 series. It also adds a functional Bajoran Wormhole and other things:

BC is far better. It's been going strong for 8 years.
Visually BC doesn't do shadows ...it does shade...meaning BC won't cast shadows from model on other models...it's just shadows based on the light direction alone.

^ and the cloaking FX don't make the ship invisible, they make the ship semi transparent and superimpose a starfield underneath...there's plenty of things that unfortunately are hard coded and will never be corrected...though that list gets a lot smaller as years go by! Apparently one modder was able to make BC run C++ code even though it runs on Python (which sounded very impressive to me when I heard it!)

wish should i start with? do i have to uninstall a mod for another to work? whats the best looking, wich mods are compatible?

As long as you have a clean BC install you can install Kobayashi Maru and then DS9 FX on top of it, personally that would be the option I would go for, personally I install "Galaxy Charts" and "BCS:TNG The Beginning" as well on top of that, it shouldn't give you any issues.

Super Mod is a bitch to try and install from my own personal experience. You'd need a separate BC install if you were going to try that because it's compatible with nothing!

Generally the better mods include manuals/documentation that walk you through their installation and such.

Also a piece of advice if you install KM...

Go into the Data/Models/Ships/Sovereign (I think that's right) folder and delete the file entitled Sovereign_vox (and no others) this corrects an issue where if the ship gets hull damage it starts looking funny!

ayeaye cappin! thanks for the advice!

It's amazing just how much the modding community has kept BC alive over the years. It's literally like a whole new game in many ways.

And I agree that Legacy is crap, especially for PC. The Xbox version is a fairly mediocre Trek combat game, but at least it's playable. The PC version is basically broken, IMO.

That was a great mod, JB, and still has a lot of potential :techman:

In agreement with all the views here: on a good graphics rig (a la 360), Legacy maybe has the edge - but then it has less work to do on the processor. But overall think Bridge Commander is a far superior game - for mod and gameplay - and if you have a high-end PC can be stunning.

Neoshade: there's lots of good advice re: installing various large mods (Supermod, KM) and other install options at the BCC main website.
